Hi libbawall,

Spiriva is a long acting bronchodilator, which means that it opens up the airways leading to your lungs, so that air is easier to get in and out of your lungs. It should not reach your lungs itself. I am assuming that you have just started using Spiriva? If so stick with it, as it does not work instantly. I noticed a difference in about 10 days, and along with mucodyne made such a difference to my breathing and coughing.

Are you use to using liquid inhalers in the past? I have always used powdered accuhalers such as ventolin and seretide so I am well use to using powdered medication for asthma and copd. The only thing you have to watch is that you make sure you gargle, and if you can't gargle at that time, make sure you take a drink as otherwise you will get residue in your mouth and throat. You can get thrush if you don't gargle or take a drink. Don't worry about any residue of Spiriva being in your lungs. It only reaches your airways to open them up to ease your breathing. Hope this information helps. Good luck and keep well. hugs from Huggs xx

Hi libbawall,

I am sorry if I have given you the wrong information. This was told to me by the pharmacist, but I am assuming the consultant knows best. I am surprised that any would reach the lungs, especially as much as 20% Hope you are well. hugs from Huggs xx

Giaco1 has been on Spiriva since 2002 and it works well. The gargle is important and if you miss you might lose your voice a little as well.

I asked my consultant about this as it is a powder I was surprised any would get past all the moisture on the way down. He told me the dosage is such that only 20% reaches your lungs, this is also why it is important that you only take the prescribed amount as it would be easy to overdose.

Hi Kad, It would appear that I gave libbawall the wrong information. I have been told by the pharmacist that it does not reach the lungs itself, but opens up the airways. I assume the consultant knows best. I am truly amazed that any of this powder, and 20% of it at that reaches the lungs.

Take care, hugs from Huggs xx

Count your blessings, that has been the one and only drug that really worked for me, and I couldn't take it. It gave me terrible vertigo.

Hi salis,

That is such a shame that Spiriva does not agree with you. It has worked wonders for me, and made such a difference to my coughing and breathlessness. If anyone tried to stop me taking it, I would scratch their eyes out! lol I hope they can find something else that will help you. Take care, logs of hugs xxx

Salis, there are at least two new long acting bronchodilator inhalers, one is Seebri and the other is Genuair. They might work for you without the vertigo. Hope you can find an effective alternative to Spiriva.

Hello salis. You have certainly given me something to think about as I have vertigo as soon as I tilt my head back and I have also been taking spiriva for about the same length of time. I never connected the two and when I mentioned the vertigo to my consultant she suggested seeing an ENT person. spiriva works very well for me and I wouldn't want to change it but thank you for this information.
