Does anyone else get foot cramps and fingers locking /cramps on steriods.
Not with steroid use but get this because of inflame arth. cx
Don't have arthritis, been tested. Only been on steriods SInce Nov, and the cramps started two months in. Doc thinks it could be related.
I do, but I don't think it has anything to do with taking Steroids. I have been having horrible spasms in my fingers, hands, arms for a good number of years before I ever had to use Steroids. They were so bad at one time I was sent to Hospital to have an EMG Test. Not something I enjoyed having!!! The results were inconclusive.
The foot cramps may well be medication induced as these have only been really bothering me a few years.
I use Quinine tablets at night but to be honest I don't really get any relief.

Sounds similar to urs. My fingers lock but not my toes. Docs unsure if steroid related started two months since starting steriods . Not arthritis. Not been put on quinine. Seems worse in cold weather.
Hi if you have lung disease yer will get cramps when i was in hospital all my toes did strange stuff i had to straiten them b4 docs seen them .. then i asked doc thay said its lack of oxygen needless ti say am just glad its only now and again it happends but yer my fingers do same but only lock together not as extreme as my toes.
HAS THIS BEEN VERIFIED? MINE ARE JUST STARTING TO DO THAT,FOR NO APPARENT REASON. I AM DISGUSTED. I HAVE A VARIETY OF ILLNESSES--WITH A VARIETY OF MEDS- MY VASCULAR SURGEON SAID THE CIRCULATION IS GREAT IN MY LEGS, BUT THE CRAMPS STILL TRY TO COME. AND WHEN I HAVE HELD MY HAND IN ONE POSITION FOR A LOIG TIME, IT HAPPENS. ONLY TWICE SO FAR. MUST BE ME SNEAKING A SMOKE NOW AND THEN WILL DO IT TO
COPD? LIFE SUCKS. ZELDA
Hiya Pamilia,I have had cramp on numerous occasions and often wondered if it was the steroids..The doctor gave me Quinine tabs for this as the cramps were quite severe. The doctor told me I had low potassium and this may be the cause..Hope this helps..Eat lots banana's x
Aw funny (not really) that you should ask this now.
I've been getting cramps in my right foot and the feeling is horrible. I get a cramp in little toe area and put my hand down to ease it and find little toe sticking out at right angle to foot. Rub it & squish it about only to have immediate cram in the instep. Rub that & it goes back to toe. It's driving me nuts. For the first time the other day I actually look at my toes during the cramps and saw all my toes splayed out & twisted claw like. Ghastly. If I thought quinine would help I'll go & get some tonic.
Await more replies for any ideas. I have broken the foot plus 3 toes at different times in the last 10 years.
I suffered with cramp in my right foot as soon as I go to bed. Now I have started drinking diet tonic water at bedtime andit seems to have gone. Good luck.
Ah that's interesting. I will try it when I come back from holiday. I wonder if it works with a little gin in it! P
Hi peeg my dr recommended a glass of tonic every evening ( never said no gin, only joking) for my foot and leg cramps and it gas helped enormously
I got terrible cramps in my toes feet legs and fingers when I was taking prednesolone. I had to force my fingers apart. It is rather strange but I have been off the steroids for 2 weeks and lo and behold the cramps have vanished
That's the drug l am on so it remarks have really help me.....thanks.
All I know is that Pete gets cracking sounding joints, mainly ankles and shoulder, but not cramps as such. He also has restless leg syndrome. Hope you get some help pamilia. Take care. xxx
I get it but never on steroids, it usually happens when I don't have salt in my food for a few days

I get them on the odd occasion from taking steroids now and again. I have been prescribed quinine. Bananas can help cramps but don't give instant relief. I think I'd prefer to eat the bananas !
Interesting I am getting pins and needles in my hand in the morning and last night it was quite strong, not sure what its all about think I should check potassium? I don't take any meds at all..once up it tends to go away, strange ..I don't take salt either in my food.
Hubby and I both get severe cramp in our legs, feet and hands and for years we have tried to work out the similarity and the only thing we came up with was that we both take Seretide, other than that we have no idea what causes it, darn annoying though
serertide i know was the culprit that gave me bad cramps feet legs ribbs toes some times had to jump out of bed to stand to get rid
I suffered with foot and hand cramps long before my copd was diagnosed, so was not on any medication at the time.
It has got worse over the years, very scary when it happens if I an driving and my feet lock, and the pain is awful.
I blamed it on poor circulation as my feet and hands always feel cold when it happens, even when I have sox and gloves on. As my copd gets worse the cramps are more frequent making me think it has to do with a a lack of oxygen.
All this rain doesn't help either. I hope the promised 'heat-wave,' comes soon xx
Yep same here. Excruciating toe/foot cramps and almost painless finger locking. Dr didn't think it was med related but gave me quinnine tablets which work very well but within a day or two of stopping the tablets it's all back again which is a pain because I don't want to take quinine permanently - they carry their own risks.
I get cramp in my big toe joint and in my fingers a lot, but I don't take the Prednisolone as it does not agree with me, so I put it down to side effects from my other meds.
Yes Pamilia I`ve suffered from awful cramp for years especially when I`m on steroids but also when not on pred but if I use my Bricanyl inhaler a lot. Had quinine for years( which was no help) until the pharmacist came to see me on one of my regular stays in hospital and told me how toxic the tablets were. Bananas are supposed to help `cos they`re full of potassium. My doc recommends 2 paracetamol and thick socks at bedtime. Find it hard to cut food up at mealtimes when my hands are really bad and my language when I`m dancing round the bedroom in agony at 3am
would make the devil blush ! Best wishes, Sheila x
Hi Pamilia, I get a lot of cramps in feet and legs, also in hands. Especially bad when sitting down and in bed. I don't know if it is steroids but I am on fairly high dose inhalers plus oral prednisolone. My GP suggested having small glass of tonic each day(gin optional!). It does seem to help some - makes them less severe I think. Darth
This is interesting I assumed my cramps were just because I,m getting old.Sorry about the joke Letys could,nt resist. D.
Hi there pamilia, yes from time to time I get foot cramps and hands too but mostly at night ,soon passes though, I don't take steroids .But I do Take "Seretide 250 inhaler. There seems no medical answers for this form of cramp lots of tips hmm but do they work? I know that when cramp hits me in the feet ....It works if I bring my foot high on my toes it goes almost immediately. hope that may help some of you ..
Oh yes all the time particularly in bed.
Hi pamilia, I found out by a doctor on the net that camp is a warning of a shortage of Calcium ....maybe you could try this remedy, I am going to try it .best of luck
I have cramp a lot all over my body have recently been diagnosed with a few autoimmune disorders but the cramps seem to be worse when I am taking steroids
Yup, get them all the time when Im weaning off steroids. Prednisone sucks the calcium out of your bones, which causes an imbalance in your electrolytes. Drinking tonic water ( we dont have quinine pills in the US), and getting extra potassium and calcium can help.
