Bronchiectasis sufferer with repeats of H.I (update)

Hi Everyone,

So I saw the GP last friday. He said that after my 3rd lot of amoxicillin I should have been moved on to something else. He has put me on 200mg of cefixime twice a day for two weeks. I asked about going to the RBH and he said that it was down to my current consultant to make that referral. He said that GP's can't really step on their toes and that it should come from the hospital. The problem is I don't see the consultant until 17th June. We spoke to consultants secretary yesterday who was taken aback when we asked if he would refer me on to the RBH. She went away for ages then came back and said what were we hoping to gain out of moving to which we just said that it was a specialist hospital, leaders in their field with someone who was specialised in my condition. She said that the consultant would review my notes and either she would let me know before my appointment or it would be something we discussed at my next appointment. From my point of view i'm worried that waiting 5-6 weeks will be more harmful to me but I just don't seem to be in a position to do any more. This is so frustrating and 6 days in to my antibiotics things don't really seem to be changing. I still bring stuff up about 4 -5 times a day and although it's changing colour it's still really sticky and quite lumpy which i'd have thought would have got better now. I just don't know what to do x

I am sorry I don't either but I would advise you ring the BLF helpline (click on the red balloon in the corner) - they may know how to negotiate this stalemate. Good Luck TAD xx

Amoxicillin 'not more effective than using no medication'

A new study has found that amoxicillin, an antibiotic typically used to treat coughs and bronchitis, is no more effective than using no medication at all.

The research, carried out by scientists at the University of Southampton, shows that the antibiotic does not even help relieve symptoms of lower respiratory tract infections (LRTI) in older people compared with using no medication.

As part of the study, the largest randomised placebo controlled trial of antibiotics for LRTI, 2,061 adults from across 12 countries in Europe were given either amoxicillin or a placebo three times a day for a week. The doctors noted a minimal difference in the severity or duration of symptoms reported between the two groups, even for older patients.

Although more patients in the placebo group experienced new or worsening symptoms - 19.3% compared to 15.9% - just two patients needed hospital treatment. One person in the antibiotic group also required a hospital stay.

The study, which is published in Online First in The Lancet Infectious Diseases, also shows that almost three in 10 (28.7%) patients in the antibiotic group suffered side effects such as nausea, rash, and diorrhoea, compared with around a quarter (24%) of those taking the placebo.

Do you have a link Kad? I would be interested to see if bronchiectasis patients were included in this work. Also if MC&S was done initially and what dosage and for what length of time they were given.

was in nursing times. if you google the first line it will come up, you have to register but it is free.

Thank you everyone. Kad21 that's a good read. Just makes me mad, surely the health professionals should know this and not keep giving it to me?!!

I know, I went to my doctor last week for new prescription of rescue meds, and he was going to give me amoxicillin, I asked him if he had heard that they were supposedly ineffective, and he said YES!!! consequently I asked for something else, must get more perks from the makers......
