Hi heho

I had this procedure done in December and it wasn't in the least traumatic. I had a cannula placed in the back of my hand and was given a light sedative. They then applied some gel to each nostril and asked me to sniff hard. This numbed my nose, throat and vocal cords but it didn't cause me any problems. The scope was put up one nostril and fed down the back of my throat, this didn't cause me any retching and I didn't feel anything. What happens next really depends on the procedure you're having, once that's done the scope is removed and you're taken to a ward for a few hours while you recover.

It really is a fairly straightforward procedure and done very quickly so don't worry so much. You'll also have plenty of opportunity to discuss the procedure on the day.

Hope this reassures you but if you have any specific concerns let us know and I'm sure we'll be able ease your worries about your bronchoscopy

Thank you so much. Your words have made big difference to the way I feel now. Thank you. I just hope my lung does not collapse again due to the procedure.

Hi Heho,

I'm areal booby when it comes to procedures, as against real ops, and I just kept saying "don't forget I'm the one for the double sedation". Whatever they gave me I knew no more until I came round on the ward. Piece if cake Heho, don't worry. All the best. X

I was persuaded to have it without sedation and survived it but don't advise it. Make sure you get sedation and you will be fine. I was 79 at the time so not young and fit and ended up with part of my lung collapsed. It came back up and I believe is a rare thing so just have sedation. It doesn't last long. Popplewell

Had this procedure done recently and as others have said it was absolutely hassle free! In fact the sedative worked so well I don't even remember much about it!! I didn't have a sore throat following the procedure either. They took some 'brushings' (yucky eh?!). I have bronchiectasis so it was to check if anything else was going on. It wasn't thankfully. Don't worry about it. It will be absolutely fine.

I was recently diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis. I'm interested in all the available treatments; what's been used and successful, as well as what to avoid. I was prescribed an inhaler, but I use it as little as possible. I want increase my lung function and soften the fibrosis, because I'm always fighting the urge to dry-cough. It make me very tired.
