Time for the 'big' scan.

X-rays came up negative and so now onto the next step with a CT scan. Never been so nervous in my life-well apart from a crazy roller coaster I took in China. 1 hour to scan and 24 to results. Hold a candle.

My bronchiectasis came up on an ordinary x ray. Does anyone know why this happens to some and not to others.

I had to have a CT scan after I had a violent cough which would not go away. I had all the tests imaginable, x rays, lung function tests. I was even referred to a Thoracic Consultant. CT scan was the last test I had, that proved negative, lungs and heart were fine apart from some scarring caused through asthma and the fact that I had had this cough for so long, however they did find a cyst on my kidney with the CT scan, that's fine. The Thoracic consultant prescribed me with Symbicort inhaler 200, 12 puffs a day then reducing down. Within three weeks the cough went. After suffering it for 12 months with my vocal chords being put to the test during that time, voice was lost for almost four months. I was frightened this was something very serious indeed. Thank God, the new inhaler sort my problems out. Please try not to worry too much, you may find you have a similar situation to me. Keeping my fingers crossed for you that all is well with you. I know how you are feeling.

Hoping your situation mimics Beth's, sounds like a hell of a roller coaster, but with arms in the air and smiley relieved face ending. Wishing you a good outcome with a lit candle x

I know that feeling, but look on the bright side it's the best way of finding fixable things.

Good luck.

Hi Jeremy76, Scans are more common these days as they can discover more early stage lung problems that Xrays don't always show. Meaning treatment can begin quicker if needs be. So do not worry and hopefully everthing will be all clear good luck and best wishes.

Good luck Jeremy.

There are often good outcomes like Beth's above, then getting the right levels of medication for a good quality of life whatever the outcome.

I believe CT scan is the way to go for a diagnosis.

I'm hoping you dont smoke?

Eat as well and as healthily as you can, drink good fluids, do whatever exercise you can manage to give yourself stamina and strength :)

my understanding too Bev. Asthma affects airways, no?

Never mind, I have it too, I presume my scars are from the pneumonias, infections and perhaps measles etc .......

hope you're okay (thank g** site seems back to normal) :)

Wow, you guys are awesome.

Thankyou so much for your kind words and encouragement.

The scan went well, no adverse reaction from the contrast fluid (was a bit cold before they pumped me so the little warm boost I got was a bonus) Anyway, results tomorrow.

Once again, thanks for all your love, it's a bit lonely here in HK being a white minority,

You've made my day.

I didn't either until I saw the thoracic specialist. This had been my first CT scan ever. Had loads and loads of x rays with chest infections and severe asthma. I am 61 years old and have suffered with asthma since I was 17 when I had pneumonia. The pneumonia left its calling card in the way of asthma and I have had some dreadful incidents over the years. But this persistent cough I had the year before last was scarier than I ever had before. I could not get rid of it. It was violent in that once a spasm of coughing started it was difficult to stop.

I thought this too but the Thoracic Specialist explained that it is not just the asthma its when you get the chest infection that then ends up with asthma. I have had umpteen attacks of bronchial asthma, constant coughing and gasping for breath. So its a combination of chest infections and asthma that has caused the scarring.

I have had both MRI & CT scan but they were for my hip and lower back I have to say the first time I went in to the MRI I did think this must be what its like riding the rollers before you enter the furnace but we should not moan they are fantastic things we could not live without them, good luck with your scan and results x
