gas fire
I never noticed this when I had a gas fire. Its good you have identified that your breathing is better when the fire is not used. All gas appliances should have regular checks now 10 monthly I believe, to be sure it is safe.
I prefer the gas fire to the electric. I have fan electric fire now, it dries the air even more than central heating and can lead to coughing if I have it on too long.
As I put on another post this week, I went to visit a friend the other day and she had got her gas fire on, within 15 minutes my throat had dried up and I started coughing, in the end they turned the fire off, I now have a chest infection and do wonder that helped towards it.
polly xx
I have noticed that the gas fire affects my breathing adversely. I tend not to use it at all now, preferring just to use the central heating.
hiya blakey x we get it checked we also put a bowl of water in the room x im always lookin for what makes me breathless ect I have moderate copd my husband is on transplant list . it seemed I was takin my blue inhaler regular I never had chest infection neither does my hubby . I was thinkin it might be something wed eaten but we had nt bate the same things so I thought it can only be the fire n sure enough we breathing loads better . I don't know if its coincidence but I will be keeping a diary etc x x
good thinking to keep diary, I have a humidifier, wet cloths on radiator and radiator ceramics filled with water and I've been hard pushed to keep humidity high enough, its been way too low, its a real juggling situation this time of year, too damp out too dry in. oh well such is life
had grandads gas fire taken out when he went on oxygen all the time stop him blowing himself up uses a fan heater now gives him dry flaky skin he gets cream for
If you have concerns about your gas fire please get it checked by a gas safe (used to be Corgi) installer? Yes the fire will dry the air as it heats the space but all gas fires should have a some combustion air entering the room. The trouble is people try to improve their homes with double glazing etc to stop draughts but forget that the gas fires need oxygen too, and only good double glazing people will inform you of that??
My youngest daughter was always bothered by the gas fire if it was on made her asthma cough go into overdrive. So there is something drying about them but agree get checked just incase xxx
Just a thought, have you got a carbon monoxide alarm?
I find that if my husband puts the real fire on, my chest tightens up virtually straight aay, so I don't bother with it anymore. It looks romantic etc, but I'd rather be able to breathe. But yes, deffo get a Carbon Monoxide alarm. x
My partner has COPD and I have Atrial Fib. Both went for a few days break ( got back today ) to a static caravan... Gas fire left us totally breathless !!! Needed to turn the level down or open a window for circulation... At home we have electric storage heaters... NEVER had an issue until using the fire.
