Hi

As spireva is a long acting 24 hour drug there should be no need!

I only use once a day.

Hi, Minky, I was prescribed once a day am. I stick strictly to what is prescribed - that way I avoid trouble. I dont have problems with spiriva although I did pop one in my mouth once. Oh dear but checked I wouldn't come to grief.

Like stone says, its a 24 hr drug,,i use mine first thing in the morning only

Spiriva is a once a day drug so should only be used as such. I can't see any Dr prescribing it for more frequent use.

Use this once a day only, I have questioned the effectiveness of this getting to the lungs given it is a powder and it is an awfully wet voyage. I was told they expect 20% of the dose to arrive and the size of the tablet reflects that so there is actually a very high dose of medicine in that little tablet and should not be taken more than prescribed.

I use the Spriva Respimat which is like a mist, the dose is slightly less but they reckon more gets down into the lungs. Find it much better than the dry powder capsules.

lina61 Hi kad21.How are you at the moment.I know this post is two years old, but i have just been diagnosed with COPD too, as well as an enlarged heart.Which was probably caused by the lung problem.Anyway my doctor has put me on Spiriva too.She said it has a small amount of cortisone in it.It seems to be helping with the breathlessness. But i just wanted to ask you, if it makes you retain fluid.I worry about the cortisone, in case i put on weight. Are you still doing well with it.?See i also have early stage kidney disease, and don't want to put on weight.

Hi Lina61

sorry you also have to live with this awful condition, I hope you are coping. I don't have a problem with retaining fluid, in fact my main problem is that I am losing weight pretty rapidly. I do find Spiriva helps me, I also take seretide, which is a steroid, hate taking it but needs must.

what is spirexa is this a tablet or inhaller ?

Spiriva. It's an inhaler. You put a dry powder capsule into the Handihaler, press to pierce the capsule and suck on the mouthpiece to inhale the powder. It doesn't have a propellant, I was changed onto Spiriva as I was sensitive to the propellant in Ventolin. I have no knowledge of the Spiriva Respimat as I have the Handihaler.

If your doctor has said once a day then don't use it more. If in doubt look at the NHS website on the drugs section.

Spiriva is only meant to be used once a day Minkymoo, you doctor should have told you this.

Hi Minkymoo - We were told by the respiratory team that it was a 24 hour acting drug and not to take it more than once a day. TAD xx

Hi,

Just seen your post, I have been on Spiriva around 9 years, a year ago my Consultant asked me to trial it for a month TWICE a day every 12 hours and to report back direct to him my results. Which I did as it was beneficial he has prescribed it permanently to be used every 12 hours ie twice a day. I am of course aware that it is normaly a 24 hour drug, I think other people have been part of the trial, but you should not use it twice a day unless your Doctor or Consultant ask you to do so! I emphasise this follow the advice of your medics.

I have had COPD/Emphysema for 25 years and one thing I have learned is to follow the advice of my Medics and have realised that with this disease everyone is different. If I can help you further do contact me.

Regards,

Halsa
