Can anyone tell me the difference between Symbicort 400/12 and 160/4.5? I am in Thailand and they don't sell 400/12 only 160/4.5

Symbicort is a budesonide/formoterol combination. Budesonide is an inhaled corticosteroid and acts by reducing and preventing respiratory tract inflammation, while formoterol works as a long acting beta 2 agonist which dilates the respiratory tract. The larger number is the dose per actuation of budesonide (in micrograms, eg 400 or 160) and the lower number the dose of formoterol (also in micrograms, eg 12 or 4.5). So the 160/4.5 is the same as the 400/12, just in a lower dosage combination.

Why not ask at a clinic

I would say the dose 160/4.5 is a lower dose than 400/12, but you could check on-line to be sure.

Perhaps the lower dose is intended for children, the pharmacist should be able to tell you.

Hi jamorro. I also live in Thailand. I use Symbicort 320/9, used to use 160/4.5, I think that you will find that 320/9 is the same as 400/12. I have asked advise in the past from Astrazenca (manufacturer) and they have always been helpful.

astrazeneca.co.th/. the 400/12 is normally available outside Thailand from online pharmacies. Take care if you are going to import. I get all my medical supplies from Fascino. Cheers Dave from the LoS.

Thank you very much Yorkie70. You have been very helpful. I have been here (in Thailand) since March last year and I have just run out of all my UK prescription medication. Most I can get in a chemist (especially in Hua Hin as there is a Chinese chemist) but the symbicort has been a little difficult. So your reply is excellent. Thanks again

LoS = Land of Smiles. The Dr. has a full stop after it. Dave = my given name. I would recommend the following hospital.
