Hello, diagnosed with bronchiectasis ... - Lung Conditions C...
Hello, diagnosed with bronchiectasis in April ,spent a week in hospital, can anyone tell me the average peak flow score for a 61 yr old femal
It would depend on your height as well as age and gender. There are various charts online for all aspects of lung function - if you just search for 'peak flow chart'. Is there a reason why you are particularly interested in Peak Flow - as opposed to FEV1 or FVC? I only ask because peak flow is usually more a measure of Asthma. Also if you haven't found them already, you may find the Bronchiectasis forum usefull: bronchiectasis.info/
Thanks Parvati,I haven't been offered any other tests so the peak flow is all I can go on, I'm 5ft7 aged 61. Just looked on the chart 400 seems average, managed 345 today,my best for three months !
Sorry I couldn't be of more use, but I don't have Bronchiectasis myself - however there are a few on here that do, so hopefully someone will be along for you later. Pleased to read that today's result is your best in 3 months - so whatever your reading is, the one thing you can be sure of is that you are 'on the up'! May that continue to be the case for you
I also have celiac disease, does anyone know if there is a connection?
Hi I am 60 with moderate COPD. My fev1 is usually around 300. I understand for my age it should be around 400-450. x
don't worry love ,stop smoking like i done .i have emphysema chronic bronc,i take antibiotic one weeks yes another week no
well good is about 500 I'm 150/ 200 . you should be about 350 ?400
Hi grasso ,
Welcome to the site. I am 63 , female and 5'2" tall. According to the charts I should blow about 380 , but only achieve about 220. I have copd (55% lung function ) mainly as a result of smoking for most of my adult life.
Quit smoking last November and now feel fitter and healthier than I have for years . The above figures are really just numbers. It is what you can do which is important . Many on this site will testify that plenty of exercise , keeping to a healthy weight , a good diet and not smoking will all help to keep the worst symptoms of lung disease at bay .
I am able to walk 4/5 miles on the flat a fairly brisk pace , do gardening and moderate exercise classes.
There are a number of people on this site who have had bronchiectasis since childhood and they have managed to lead fairly normal lives . I think the main thing is keeping on top of mucous clearance . If you type bronchiectasis into the search box above it will bring up some of their posts which you may find interesting to read.
Cheers Coastal
Welcome Grasso,
Strange all they are offering you in the way of tests is peak flow.
I assume you had a ct scan to be diagnosed with bronchiectasis. With bronchiectasis you should really be under the care of a respiratory consultant, preferably one with a special interest in cf/bronchiectasis. Check out the consultants at your hospital and then you can tell you GP which one you would like to be referred to.
You should expect lung function tests (spirometry which Parvati referred to with FEV and FVC). They should also refer you to a respiratory physiotherapist who will teach you techniques and gadgets which suit you to help clear your lungs - which you will have to do yourself every day to keep your lungs clear as poss. Con will then sort out suitable medication regime.
You have to be your own advocate with bronchiectasis and nicely fight your own corner to get the good treatment you deserve.
By the way sorry you have celiac disease along with bronch - a lot to cope with. Inflammatory arthritis is another which can go hand in hand with bronch. I have this, but you would have to be very unlucky indeed to have all of them.
Any queries ask away - there will always be someone around to help or support you.
Good luck
Love cx
Hello flibberti, yes I'm feeling a bit neglected and in the dark at the moment. I'm hoping the disinterest is a good sign! Not as bad as I thought maybe.....gave up smoking 7 years ago, have been free of chest infections since...until April when I ended up in hospital breathless and scared, just have blue inhaler.
Hi Grasso97
I am so sorry but I do not personally know, however, my GP tells me that if my Peak Flow goes down as far as 300 I should take my Prednisolone emergency pack and ring them!
Take care
Ken
I have RLD and peak flow is not a good indicator. I can blow 350 now but my O2 has gone down to 85% at rest normally 95/92% and I would still blow 350 peak flow.
Be Well
