This is just a small thought that might help, what about a face mask like they use in china to stop cold air getting into your lungs, or an old fashioned way wrap a scarf round your lower face. Good luck

What I have is a snood, also called a buff (from the firm that makes them), neck warmer, neck tube. This is a tube made out of wool or thermal. You pass it over your head. You can cover your mouth and ears with that. there are different quality. type it on Google or see them at Amazon, in various colours and prices. They are gorgeous around the neck and protect your mouth against the cold wind. I have a couple of those, one softer and one heavier. I'd warmly recommend them.

Hi Meg, I'm sorry to hear this, it's quite a shock isn't it.

Two things you can do, as said above in wrapping up warm. As a previously tough (and vain) person never having used a hat or scarf I did last year when realising it's all caught up with me and the ills are not going to go away as I get older, they will get worse unless I look after myself. Had fair warning now! I'm the proud owner of a cashmere shawl. A gift. It's light folds small but opens to go round my neck, shoulders & can cover my head too. It's the warmest thing I've ever had.Just pull it up to cover my nose & mouth when it's very cold & there's smoke & fumes about.

I've heard here that the 'Buff' or 'Buffy' is good and doesn't hold your breath moisture when you wrap it around your face.

Second, when it's cold out breath in through your nose & out through the mouth. Breathing through nose first warms the air a lot better before it hits your lungs. If you can practice this it becomes second nature when it's cold out.

Take care & good luck, peeg

Thank you il try that,it's taking ages to calm down, yet it happened this morning 'iv floord the inhalers today ,it's scared me that much,iv had lots of hot drinks but no food, thinking back I was in my daughters car on sat and she was smoking till I told her to open a window,I don't think that's helped either

The car is the worst place for passive smoking as its such a small place so smoke is very concentrated. The BLF had - maybe still has - a huge campaign about protecting children from second hand smoke in cars. Hope your daughter understands now :) Sometimes we have to do lots of educating the people around us so we are protected.

She doesn't know anythingswrong yet,,iv just checked My sats97 and my peak flow is 530

Well however bad the attack, those stats sound pretty good to me now (its all relative of course!) But please make sure this doesn't happen to you again - our lungs are so delicate.

in reply toO2Trees

Do protect yourself against your daughter smoking. As O2trees said, this is the worst of passive smoking, and opening the window in this cold must feel terrible in this biting wind. I hope you have theremals and thermal gloves!

I wear two woolly jumpers. I chose assorted colours, so people won't laugh at me!

Thank u for all ur help

Hi meg, I know how frightening an attack like that can be and can knock your confidence.

I hope all goes well when you see your respiratory nurse

As peeg says breathe through your nose to help warm the air, and try and breathe gently. A light non-fibrous scarf over your mouth and nose is good too......not tight ot thick!

I find a change in temperature can set me coughing...even opening the frig sometimes does it. I find pursed lips breathing can help calm me down too.....breathe gently in through your nose and gently out through pursed lips

Best wishes

Well ,nurse checked me out, sats 98,peak flw540.had to see the doc as well, inthe past iv had panic attacks ,this was quite similar, but appararantly this hiatus hernia is causing probs too,cz ometimes I have keep taking deep breaths now and again,so iv got another tablet to take with my omeprazol ,to try and settle things, coz it can impinge on ur breathing, quite common apparently
