I developed asthma about 4 years ago, then 51 yrs old. The last couple of years I have been beset with chest infections and seemingly uncontrollable asthma. Consultant told me COPD but then last hospital visit the registrar said Asthma . I gave up my job as a special needs teacher as this contributed to repeated infections as schools are germ ridden. I am being treated for COPD and asthma. Can it be both? Fev1 about 50%, worse each time I am tested. I was an intermittent social smoker till about a year ago. Would buy a big pack of silk cut ultra low on holiday and still have some left the next year. I feel lost and am worried.

Asthma? COPD.
Hi, I was diagnosed with asthma 20 years ago after pneumonia and pleurisy...had numerous chest infections and in and out of hospital.
But on my last check up I was told I had COPD caused by smoking 40 years ago...so still confused and still wheezing and coughing!
There are a lot of ideas on this site on how to keep as well as possible, and the BLF helpline is open on weekdays.
best wishes
I live most of the time in the Pyrenees now. Simple life, less exposure to infections, clear air, as much physical exercise as I can. Some days can do nothing, other days I am fine.
Hi BigBreaths
It can be both, not all but there is a fair percentage who do have both asthma and COPD. But you do need to try and avoid lung infections. I think a good move you came away from the work environment.
Keep warm during the winter inside and through the night (recommended inside temperature is 21C waking time and 18C sleeping for damaged lung folk), also if you can try to avoid contact with persons who may be infected with a cold or the flu virus.
If you've not chatted with BLF helpline you may want to do that, the helpline is open normal working week days between 10am and 5pm, for contact details click on the red balloon top right.
Hope your day is an easy breathing one.
Best wishes BC
Hi big breaths, not an unusual diagnosis I believe it's possible to have both. My original diagnosis was COPD/Asthma for many of us it's often never correctly defined as both are incurable and require similar treatment. If you read up everything on lungs most of the symptoms are similar only CTs seem to define more clearly. The main thing for you to do is keep looking after yourself and asking for the best treatment you can get.Have a good day.
Hi there bigbreaths I too was diagnosed with both I have separate appointments for them every 6 mths now.I think emphysema takes the lead now as my lungs have got worse. Please try not to worry as this will only make you feel worse .The best things for you to do to give your lungs the very best help, are stopping smoking, exercise as much as you are able, eat a healthy diet stay away from people coughing and sneezing etc,and have the flu jab yearly and pneumonia jab which lasts 10 years or more.you sound like you live in a wonderful enviroment which must make a difference. Although no cure there is no reason why you shouldnt live a normal active life for many, many years to come, maybe doing things a little slower.Ive had these two conditions for well over 20 years and not planning on going anywhere soon! Please try not to worry takecare now be happy and keep well,.
