~~~~~~~~~~~~~It's All About the Green Thing ~~~~~~In Our Day
KingoftheCocktails profile image
It's all about the green thing in our day
In the line at the shop, the cashier told the older woman that plastic bags weren't good for the environment.
The woman apologised to her and explained,
''We didn't have the green thing back in my day.''
That's right. they didn't have the green thing in her day. Back then, they returned their milk bottles, Coke bottles and beer bottles to the shop. The shop sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilized and refilled, using the same bottles over and over. So they really were recycled
But they didn't have the green thing back in her day.
In her day they walked up stairs, because they didn't have an escalator in every shop and office building.
They walked to the grocery shop and didn't climb into the car every time they had to go two streets.
But she's right. They didn't have the green thing in her day.
Back then, they washed the baby's nappies because they didn't have the throwaway kind.
They dried clothes on a line, not in an energy gobbling machine burning up to 220 volts-wind and solar power really did dry the clothes. Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing. But that old lady is right, they didn't have the green thing back in her day.
Back then, they had one TV, or radio in the house-not a TV in every room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a pizza dish, not a screen the size of London. In the kitchen, they blended and stirred by hand because they didn't have electric machines to do everything for you. When they packaged a fragile item to send in the mail, they used wadded up newspaper to cushion it, not plastic bubble wrap.
They didn't have the green thing in her day.
Back then ,they didn't fire up an engine and burn petrol or use electricity just to cut the lawn. They used a push mower that ran on human power. They exercised by working so they didn't need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity.
But they didn't have the green thing back then.
They drank from a fountain when they were thirsty ,instead of using a cup or a plastic bottle every time they had a drink of water. They refilled pens with ink, instead of buying a new pen, and they replaced the razor blades in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull.
But they didn't have the green thing back then.
|Back then, people took the bus and kids rode their bikes to school or, if they lived in the country they rode the school bus, instead of turning their mums into a 24hr taxi service. They had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. And they didn't need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 2,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest pizza joint.
But that old lady is right. They didn't have the green thing back in her day.
And weren't we lucky to have lived in those truly Good Days.
The good days Eh lovelight?
Oh how very true KOTC, that was the good old days. I was shopping this morning and the old gentleman bought a bag and the cashier said it was a bag for life. He said thank you and immediately passed away. I picked up the bag and put my messages in it, cashier said to me you cannot do that it's this gentlemans. I said I am doing him a favour and getting his money's worth for the bag. LOL Berwick.
My friend from London still remembers refusing to put the scraps in the pig bin in her street, and her father grabbing her and frogmarching her down.
No waste,no want anniesed
And my mum always kept a bit of the Sunday roast back to make a stew with on Monday (wash day). She'd buy cheaper cuts of meat to cook slowly with plenty of fresh vegetables for a good healthy meal. My favourite was smoked haddock cooked in milk, which she used to make a parsley sauce.
Knitter, I remember collecting milk bottle tops at my school. The "pig bin" was still going strong in the 1990s when I worked in a school. We can thank Europe for its loss!!
Thank you KOTC and everyone for bringing back the memories, especially the smoked haddock. It's not easy to get real smoked haddock these days a lot of it is just dyed white fish, the changing times I put it down to.
