Just wondering, for a 6ft 1inch 44yrs old male, where should my peak flow reading be?

I would ring the helpline and ask them, your peak flow will depend on your state of health and medication....and time of day. Mine goes up at lunchtime and down in the evening .

When I was well, and 46 and 5ft 6" mine was 450. No longer I am afraid..a lot older, shorter, and more poorly... still (female)

I think it's a personal thing plus how wel you are.

Mine is usually 450 and when quite unwell it's still 350 which worries no-one. @ 5'4" and I'm still female too!

Before I had Respiratory Failure 8 years ago I could blow 650 on a good day I just blew 300 and this is a reasonable day.

I have boullis emphysema, not on meds and no great signs of COPD ie out of breath doing things ect, I just tried one yesterday and blew 350, I was wondering if that was ok. Thanks for the feed back.

Hi 1968 again...did you use the peak flow meter in the gp's surgery and being observed,( maybe not as it was a Sunday) or did you borrow a friends? There is a knack of blowing into one properly, standing up is better I find too, and you have to breathe in and then really have to force the breath out using the mouthpiece. I would still ring the helpline here.

It was a friend's, I was sitting down and took a couple of deep breath's then blew out very fast.

I tried it a few times and could not get over the 350 mark, he said it was good and not to worry out it.

Hi David,

You should take the breathe standing up I'd at all possible. And you should only record the best of 3 readings.

Also be careful which scale your equipment has, some are Litres per Minute, others are the EU scale.

Hope this helps.

Hi, peak flow is usually a measurement for asthma whilst COPD tends to use spirometry.

Blew 310 today so not a bad day. Female 5'6", 62.

I am on peak flow monitoring myself writing in a book daily, I go 350 morning and upto 380 in the evening and my physician has said my peak flow is flat but not remarkable so you may be like me! Ask your nurse for a peak flow meter/book and monitor yourself ☺

Everyone is different but if you keep a chart you will soon find what your reading is normally and if it goes 25% below that then see a doctor. Mine stays around 300 but I have friends with readings of 150 and they are still functioning.
