I have been having dizzy spell on and off for the past couple of weeks and don't know if it is the copd or something else. I was diagnosed in November so it is all new to me.

Hi Jacksgirl

I do have dizzy spells but only when I have a coughing fit. I managed to black out a couple of times. Perhaps best have a word with your GP or your respiritory nurse if you have one.

I have had exactly the same experience, Bobby, and I have to admit that it is the bit that I find most worrying as I live on my own and have very few visitors !

No, I can`t say that I have any dizzy spells. It might be due to something else.

I have had COPD for quite some time now and can only say that dizzy spells are not one of the things I suffer.

Hi Jacks

The only time Ive had dizzy moments is when walking for too long too fast .... and then not so much dizzy as light headed

probably not to do with copd, you might have low blood sugar or thyroid levels

Id see your gp and get some blood tests ... or eat more biscuits ..... no sorry, just fantasising

take care

Hi jacksgirl - sometimes with my emphysema, and mainly when I was coughing a lot, I found myself not eating much and sometimes, when by myself not at all due to no energy to get up and fix anything. When I was like that I sometimes got dizzy. For the last few months my cough has settled and I am eating more and I have not really felt dizzy. So for me I can only assume it was caused by not enough food. Anna xx

I have COPD and I get dizzy spells but I also have severe arthritis in my spine and I If push myself too far I pass out, so not sure, the dizzy spells could be either.

Dizzy spells can be caused by any number of different things even just going without food too long, so I would say you need to discuss this with your doctor or nurse.Take care

I do get dizzy spells, I think it's the mucus that fills up in the ears, also coughing takes everything out of you, sit down and wait for it to padd

Could be low blood pressure, i've had that for years. Make sure you drink plenty.

Hi jacksgirls, no I don't think dizzy spells are part of copd. Your best chatting with your doc about this so things can be checked out.

Take care

I was at the GP last week, not so much for being dizzy, but for losing my balance, especially on exertion. A bit like a split second blackout and falling to the side. He checked my oxygen levels, and I'd done a week's blood pressure monitoring a couple of months ago and everything seems to be normal. He wasn't really sure what was causing it in my case, but I would suggest you go and see your doctor to get checked out.

Hi I had dizzy spells and the doctor gave me tablets but he also said I had blocked up in my sinuses and gave me a nasal spray the tablets he gave me were the same as you get for hay fever

thanks for your input. I do suffer from hay fever and take anti histamines so don't think that's whats causing

Hi Jacksgirl, long time no hear :) .

Sometimes I feel lightheaded, feel weak & my legs go like jelly & I fear they will give way, sometimes acompanied with a sort of cold sweat. I've a feeling/thought that it's to do with my blood sugar plummeting & try to give my self a quick snack.

I dont know if copd effects blood sugar levels - does anyone?

I'm seeing my GP on Monday & it's on my list of things to ask about. I think you need to speak to your doc too.

Hi, god luck, let me knowhow you get on. Do you have an oximetre to check your sats? I also fel wiped out if sats are low and try to force myself to go for some exercise which makes me feel better. doc is sending me for blood test to check glucose. xx

OMG! I was having spells like hypoglycemia. Went to Dr. and diagnosed with early COPD/Emphysemia. I have NO airway restriction as yet. My doc said that the COPD may cause occasional dizziness as the O2 exchange is affected. My O2 sats were less than 90, but I had absolutely no feelings of breathlessness or restriction or anything else. I'm going in for pulmonary function tests next week. Ugh! I'm only 50. On the bright side... it isn't lung cancer.... got a few good years left!

Hiya, a warm welcome to the site!

That's interesting, no one told me that. If my 'funny turns' happen again I will do some deep breathing to see if it changes. Slowly in through nose and really deep, expanding your diaphragm/tum then slowly out through the mouth. Try it next time you feel dizzy.

There's so much to learn. The post above was a year ago and I'm still learning! You've come to the right site to learn loads to set you on the path of avoiding ill health from COPD.

Good luck with the pulmonary tests, excellent that you've got that level of care from your GP.

Kind regards, Peeg

Thank you. An oxymeter is that thing they put on your finger in hospital or docs. It shows your sats level (the oxygen in your blood) and your pulse. If your SATs are low it can make you tired.

I'm learning now to recognise if SATs are low so I can check them then do some deep breathing to get more oxygen in which makes me feel much better.

Luckily I'm still mild (I hope).

All the best to you x

I suffer from another "fun" extra along with my COPD which is known as POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome) one of many dysfunctions of my autonomic nervous system along with its sister Neurally mediated Hypotension thanks to my having Ehlers Danlos Syndrome and wonder if it might be worth doing a Google and see if anything strikes a cord with either of those conditions and if so it gives you another question for the docs next time you see them.

The key question in your situation I think might be to try and identify what if anything acts as a trigger for the light-headedness which in my case is more often than not simply a change from laying to sitting or sitting to standing or sitting/standing still too long which is how the above conditions were identified by my docs.

Oh and a final after thought cos I just found myself doing it LOL

Remember to breathe.

I know it sounds obvious but I think the way our lives get at times we can get so distracted by stress and worry or the need to complete something before we run out of steam we literally hold our breath or in my case forget to breathe because part of the system that does that for us automatically doesn't always work as well as it should till my body then says enough is enough. :)

jacksgirl2000 profile image
jacksgirl2000ā€¢ in reply toSociable

I do that too. if I am doing something all of a sudden I have to tell myself to breathe. its as if I forget to do it. I find myself holding my breath. I thought prob. that my body telling me it is easier not to breathe. thanks for that. another thing I am not alone with
