Does anyone know what I can when my gp says it's not their policy to issue fit to fly with oxygen certificate?
GPs don't usually deal with this. Try contacting your consultant's secretary. I do and she arranges for me to send in the letter supplied by my travel agent and has the consultant sign and stamp it before posting it back to me. My travel agent insists this is done in the month before I fly. However, you may need to have your oxygen levels tested first so contact them asap.
Thank you. I've been trying to contact my respiratory nurse or the secretary today with no luck, but I had an assessment a couple of weeks ago at my local hospital. I saw my consultant's registrar yesterday and she did say if had problems to contact her, so I'll contact the secretary on Monday
Toci, I don't have a form or a letter template. We are flying Easyjet and I am taking a portable concentrator, All they have said is that I need a letter to confirm that I need to use for medical use. It's the first time we have flown since I was diagnosed with PH
I went to Turkey last October using a Portable Concentrator and had no problem. My Respiratory Consultant supplied a covering letter stating I required oxygen during the flight.
I am now back on cylinders as the concentrator was unable to give me the amount of oxygen I now require (5litres when Ambulatory). Trouble is the cylinders only give me about 1hr 40mins all told.
Hi. I went to pick up my Fit to fly Cert. this week and guess what!!!! Doctor had as it said on the letter" Dictated Letter but not signed by Doctor." In second envelope an Invoice to pay £20.00. So I left both there and said I will pay when ;letter is signed. I am sure that leaves me an unpopular patient. However if you ask your Resperitory team I am sure they will write one for you It is in your interest also because they will put all the items that anyone wishes to know if you are ill abroad. Good Luck.
Read this blog with interest, when I asked my GP about fit to fly certificates I was told they don't do them. However recently I was looking at the practices list of services they charge for and low and behold I saw one on the list for fitness to fly price £20. Seems the GP's are not aware of the services they can supply at a cost. None the less I would opt for hospital certificate if it's free as stated above. This issue seems to be very hit an miss.
Your consultant can authorize this, but he/she won't if in their opinion your lung damage and breathing ability do not warrant such a test.
On the other hand there have been other lung patients that I know of, who have been advised against flying by their GP and or Consultant, even without having the fit to fly test done.
Here is some more information about flying with a medical condition which may give a little more understanding:
go right to your consultant at your local hospital, its only an idea but its worth a try, good luck Davey. xx
Thank you all. You're right, it is hit and miss. I've been trying to get hold of my respiratory nurse for days, but it's hard to make contact. I am going to contact the specialists secretary tomorrow and if that fails contact my PH consultant. They are very insistent that if we have PH we need oxygen to fly
To thank you and update - my specialist nurse at Sheffield PH Centre is arranging this for me . Corfu, here we come
