If you are assessed as needing oxygen the concentrator is supplied - I think you will find you need a prescription to buy one, as oxygen is treated as a drug....

I have recently obtained an Invacare XPO2 on long-term (I hope!) loan, from BOC, following a home assessment by the respiratory nurse from the Home Oxygen and Review Service. So if you really need one, do you need to purchase one?

I would echo Gidge's advice. If you are assessed as needing oxygen you will be supplied with it. If you use oxygen when it is not necessary you will greatly endanger your health. If you are talking about a portable concentrator that is a different matter and there are many good ones on the market depending on your particular needs, but again, these should not be used with a prior prescription for supplemental oxygen use.

Like the others I have been assessed and my oxygen is provided by Dolby who provide it North of the border.

If you are looking to buy a portable concentrator and have a precription then the company Pure 02, is extremely helpful.

If you want to purchase a POC then please do your homework first as there are lots of things to consider as I found out. I believe you will require a GP's prescription.

Firstly the weight - I am quite slightly built and the weight given of these machine is minus the batteries, covers, cables etc that goes with it which roughly doubles the weight which is not OK for me if husband isn't around.

Also the noise level could be unacceptable depending on the lpm and where you are. Definitely have a trial run with any that you like the look of. Ensure that a replacement will be available in case of service or breakdown and the guarantee is a worthwhile one.

You can purchase POC's from the USA also with a prescription (Intermedical ??) at roughly half the price than in the UK and claim back VAT/Duty etc from the Inland Revenue - forms available on line and to be completed before purchase I believe. The drawback is that warantee is in the US although I think someone told me that it could be sent to the Netherlands for attention.

I did have the use of one of my "top 3" POC's for a few weeks, free of charge, from my 02 supplier whilst travelling back and forth to hospital and was disappointed because of the overall weight, bulk, noise and I couldn't use the in car charger as I was in a hospital car which used this outlet for the Sat Nav. I was also told that I couldn't plug it into the mains at the hospital in case there was something wrong with it! However my main reason for wanting to purchase was for us to be able to take the car abroad and possibly further afield and get some sunshine without having to jump through hoops as I normally use LOX.

The BLF Magazine does have some pages of dealers and also private second hand sales however if you just want to use it for a few weeks at a time and stay in the UK then use your 02 Provider.

I have just returned to using Oxygen Cylinders after using an Invacare Portable Concentrator.

The reason for my change is because my SATS have been dropping to the low 70's and even when using the concentrator (I am on Ambulatory O2) they still dropped.

The concentrator only goes up to setting 5 but this only equates to about 4 litres (if even this).

On reassessment last week my SATS only stayed above the minimum when the oxygen was on 5 litres!!!

If you are assessed as ok to use a Concentrator it will be given to you via BOC, Air Liquide or whichever provider your area uses. There is certainly no need to buy your own.
