oxygen concentrators cost effectiveness

am doing a recce for a friend with COPD and wonder if anyone knows the cost differences (to the NHS that is) of a concentrator versus oxygen cylinders being delivered every week

Is it even worth asking them to consider changing his system? I am trying to get him out and about now and going on some trips locally but the oxygen cylinder only lasts about an hour so it is restricting

I have no idea what the cost difference might be but when on cylinders for going out mine would last around 7 hours, but I have since been changed over to a concentrator which lasts around 8 hours but can be charged in the car as well as at home. Ruth

I’d get him to contact his respiratory team. I have two concentrators, one upstairs and one downstairs for when I’m in the house, plus six small cylinders and two big ones as back up. We bought a small portable concentrator for when I go out. A small cylinder lasts me three hours as I’m on 2 litres.

My oxygen prescription sounds to be the same as yours. I've never really considered the cost but I'm just grateful for all the help given. Could I ask how expensive your portable concentrator was?

It was £2,400 but worth every penny for the freedom it’s given me. I use it so often and it’s been great for our holiday and visits to family who live a distance away. We recharge the battery when we get back in. We were very happy to pay for it as I’ve had such amazing care from the NHS which is ongoing. I’m very grateful.

Having never considered the cost I couldn't advise you but I have two machines at home, one up and one downstairs plus portable cylinder exchange as required.

Hi Kathy, my portable tank only lasts an hour when out & about, I have a converter at home for home use.

Resp nurse says cant have a portable concentrator when out as max is 3L for portables and In on 4L- check what level your friend needs

Hi I have an Inogen One G5 on the NHS and that goes up to 6L so i would ask again. i would'nt be without mine, now I have got used to it, gives you so much more freedom.
