Hi, my husband has a bad cough and has just been told by the team to take cough medicine but it doesn't really help. Is there anything else

That may help. He is on anti-biotics three times a week for ever.

Well, I thought I had found a miracle cure - not quite - but it did help my husband in his last episode! I bought some manuka honey and dissolved a teaspoon in some hot water and he sipped on that as much as he wanted. It certainly seemed to help him. Sometimes buttercup syrup helps too. Hope he starts to feel better soon. Take care. TAD xx

Does he have problems coughing up rubbish? (mucus) If so a mucolytic may help - ask the doctor or search this site for Mucodyne to give you an insight!!

Codeine, usually part of the recipe for a 'cough bottle' does have a cough surpressant effect , but sometimes I know I have to cough to get rid of the rubbish.

I also use steam.

Hope this helps

Kevin

Mucodyne (carbocisteine) is fantastic if you can get your gp to prescribe it. I couldn't manage without it and very rarely have a cough any more.

there could be another reason for the cough such as polyps

Many thanks for replies all of you. He is on erdotin. He said it just feels like a cough that is staying in the throat. Such a worry....

Pete nebulises mucoclear to help bring up the mucous but now and again when having a bad chest infection, he has used over the counter cough medicine which has helped with his throat so it is always worth a try if you can take the syrup. A GP will always advise and of course read the leaflet that goes with the cough syrup. Good luck. xxxx
