I'm no expert! But, I've noticed my wife's chest (she has chronic bronchitis) is changing shape because the breathlessness seems to make her want to take excessively deep inhalations a lot of the time. Her upper chest is higher and more rounded, and the bones have become visible. Also her back is slightly more rounded and her shoulders slightly more forwards. These are all signs of hyperinflation of the lungs, according to her pulmo.

Anyway, I mention it because I wonder if you might be developing hyperinflation and maybe the skeletal changes can lead to pain? I dunno, it's just a theory! :-)

This is so true JJRobinson, it's happened to me and others have mentioned it on the forum before. Your ribcage moves out to accommodate your hyperinflated lungs, although I'm a size 10 from the waist down and not an ounce of fat on my upper half, I now need a size 16 top. This has happened over quite a number of years and I do also have osteoporosis which doesn't help and do get upper back pain. Best to check with your gp asap smudge, as if it is an infection then the sooner it's dealt with the better. Same if you need treatment for osteoporosis. Libby x

Yes, that sounds exactly the same! She has lost all her body fat and is now distinctly skinny; her cup size has fallen to AA but the bra size has gone from 32 (or was it 34? - can't remember) to 36 and rising.

Libby, forgive me for being personal, but what kind of age group are you in? I ask because it might give us some idea of what my wife might expect as time passes. She is 55.

I'm 61 (but must point out .. only just, lol!). Does she get the upper back/shoulder pain? I ask because it might be of interest to smudge, the original poster. Libby x

Ooops! Sorry smudge - drifting off topic. No, she doesn't have the back/shoulder pain. It was just my theory - perhaps the skeletal changes associated with hyperinflation might stress the various joints, etc.

Hyperinflation searched its prices going up because monetary system out of control with lungs its air trapped inside them

Hyperinflation of the lungs occurs when a patient starts to inhale before the last breath was fully exhaled. This results in excess air getting trapped in the lungs with each subsequent breath. Most people with COPD have some degree of hyperinflation of the lungs, regardless of the severity of their condition.

Best see your doc about this pain. If there is pain around your chest also it could be a lung infection, depends what other symptoms you are presenting. If you have any worsening of symptoms, increased breathlessness, lungs feel inflamed, you are coughing more, sputum is green etc etc try to see the doc this evening or tomorrow morning or attend walk in clinic, at the very least a telephone appointment with your GP for further advice.
