The Truth and Lie Riddle.

This is quite hard, there are no tricks though. The right answer will perfectly fit the situation.

You are in a room.

There are two doors. One leads to freedom and delirious happiness, and the other to perpetual lumpy gravy times, with a bucketful of unfashionable hats and ingrowing toenails.

At each door there is one guard.

One of the guards ALWAYS lies.

The other ALWAYS tells the truth.

You have no idea which door or guard is which.

You are allowed to ask only one question of only one of the guards.

Obviously the one question will be to find the door to freedom. When you have the answer you can walk out the door of your choice.

If you ask something as simple as which door leads to freedom, the answer will be 50/50

Only one question.

Best of luck :)

Ask either door the following - if I asked the other door which door leads to freedom which one would be chosen. Given the answer take the opposite door to the one given.

I suppose asking something obvious would be the the thing to do.

'Is London the capital of England'.

The liar would say no and the truthful guard would say yes.

Go through the door guarded by the guard who answered 'Yes'. I think??!"?!?!?!?!?

It's 25 minutes past midnight and I've had two glasses of wine so you can't expect lateral thinking.

I think that I want to go to bed now.

You only have one question, the answer of which should indicate the right door to take.

That would definitely tell you who the liar was, but then you have no more questions :)

Can't do it, brain won't work. Been up since 6am, made a cottage pie - there's only so much my mind can cope with. I expect KOTC will know the answer, won't you KOTC ?

SIMPLE :)

Is there a set answer to this?

Homebreeze's reply sounds very clever but rather complicated for me :-)

Then pepsicoley's idea would work, wouldn't it?

As far as I'm aware there is only the one answer, see below and Chris's post.

It relys on the lie and the truth cancelling each other out, and giving the same answer :)

Yes, Home breeze got the answer, well done :)

The question is. "Which door will the other guard tell me leads to freedom"

The liar will lie and point to the wrong door.

Mr true knowing the other lies will also point to the wrong door.

Which means you you go out the opposite door.
