hello. i was wondering if someone could help me.. my grandad has been diagnosed with emphysema and severe bronchitus.. will he be ok? im scared as he my only family. my nan died a couple of years ago and he misses her terribley. i dont want to ask him about it i dont want to upset him.

Hi nuttynel. As long as he doesn't smoke and keeps reasonably active he should be ok. As long as he is getting the correct medicine. I'm 62 and have very severe emphysema but no bronchitis. I still work and do general stuff but I have to stop for breath quite frequently. Apart from that I do ok.
he hasnt smoked for 20 odd yrs. he gets out of breath very quickly doctors have put him on a pink pump and told him to stop using the brown one. he is 78 now but looks very pale and even more older.

I'm so sorry that your Grandad is poorly. You must be so anxious about him.
My Dad has COPD and lived until he was almost 90 years old. I miss him very much but feel sure that he is in a better place.
Your Grandad is a lucky man in that he has you caring about him. Please don't be too anxious; just take each day as it comes and enjoy the good times.

we will just have to deal with the good and bad days and make good memories. its the unknown i suppose that makes me feel worried.. i ring him every mornin to check in him and c him 3 times a week. its hard to c him eveyday as i have 4 young children

I am 70 and was diagnosed 11 yearsago with emphysema. I am still going strong and there is no reason your grandad shouldn't last for years yet, provided he keeps taking anything that is prescribed for him. I wish you well sweetheart. Bob xx
Hello, So sorry to hear your Grandad is so ill. What a worry for you. You are so sweet to care so much, he is so lucky to have you. Perhaps you should ring the BLF helpline, they could answer some of your questions and could make talking about it to your Grandad easier. Good Luck. Take good care of yourself. TAD xx
