Azithromycin - specialist wants me to go on a daily low dose, anyone done this? Also what to expect with biologic injections?

I was a bit unnerved when she suggested a daily antibiotic long term - how have you found it? Looks like I’m going to be put on biologics jabs in a couple of months also, after CT scan and lung function test. On a week of prednisolone at the moment which is probably making me freak out a bit about all these drugs more than normal. Happy to take anything that makes my asthma better but it’s hitting me that I’m only early 40w and on so much medication 🫣 and probably about to go on more. Hopefully with my asthma being better managed I’ll not feel like I’m in my 90s fingers crossed 🤞. Any advice about these drugs would be great to hear. So hate prednisolone side effects - hopefully biologics will mean I will potentially never have to take them again. Thanks for any advice.

I have non-eosinophilic asthma and Prednisolone really doesn't help when my asthma flares up, but Azithromycin is very effective for me. So far I've only had 16 week courses of low dose Azithromycin, one dose 3 times a week, but I believe there are other forum members who are on Azithromycin full time (one dose 3 times a week).

I was lucky enough to be a volunteer for a research project at my Respiratory Clinic and that led to my Azithromycin treatment, once my involvement in the project was over. I don't experience any side effects and it addresses the inflammation and mucus over production.

This article explains some of the ongoing research on Azithromycin and its affect on lung function and health. oxfordbrc.nihr.ac.uk/oxford...

I know that combining Azithromycin and biologics is an option when treating severe asthma. If you're concerned about this level of treatment, you could discuss a step up plan, in that you start on one additional treatment and only progress to both if the first doesn't work effectively.

I have severe asthma & under the Royal Brompton and on a biological. Every winter I would be in resus 3 or 4 times due to severe exacerbations caused by chest infections. I was put on Azithromycin 3 times a week & it changed my life, before I was off work between Nov & Feb getting weaker with every hospital admission with no real quality of life.

Since starting Azithromycin I have only had one hospital admission in 3 years , it really was a game changer for me, I have my life back.

I was initially on it for the winter months only but when I had a hospital admission in the early summer they suggested that I take it all year around.

One of the side affects that they mentioned to me was possible hearing loss but I was ok to take that risk considering how it changed my life

Hi. Having had lots of chest infections I paid to see a Respiratory consult privately. He has suggested Azithromycin 500 mg three times a week to keep ‘things’ under control.

My consultants choice is clarithromycin. I've been taking 250mgs twice daily now for over 2 years. It's stopped the resus visits and less frequent A&E visits. I was very nervous at first, but now don't give it a thought.

I am on azithromycin 3 x week during the winter. I am due to have more tests in a couple of months to determine what type of asthma I have

I was given a three month course of azithromycin to be taken three times a week (Monday, Wednesday and Friday) about a year ago.I had struggled for several years with bronchiectasis and asthma which did not respond to prednisolone . I took many other courses of antibiotics which only eased things for a short time.

Azithromycin was life changing for me.

I am still free of the awful, debilitating symptoms of phlegm, very difficult breathing problems and crippling fatigue even after a year now.

I still can't believe it.

I still religiously take my asthma medication of fostair 100/6 and montelukast but it has all been completely life changing. I also have an action plan from the Consultant if it all starts again and I need to have azithromycin again.

I've been taking 2x tablets 3 days a week for going on 2 years.... there are a number here that have been on it for longer

It works I wouldn't knock it... did your specialist explain the theory behind it? ... someone (I don't know how it was discovered) found out that a certain antibiotics used over long periods of time lower inflamation in the body (the lungs too) ... they aren't sure if it's because the antibiotics turn off or "dampen" down certain parts of the immune system or if bacteria is "loitering" in certain groups of people causing more inflamation than others.... but its well researched it works.... my exhaled nitros oxide was 50% of what it was after being on azythromycin for 6 months.

been on Azithromycin for several years it’s supposed to lessen exacerbations publications.ersnet.org/con...

haven’t seen any evidence it’s worked nor that it hasn’t but keep on believing.

Started on TEZSPIRE biologic injection sept 2023 not been in hospital since which is a record for me but my day to day asthma hasn’t improved just the infection related exacerbations gone from 4/5 hospital visits a year to nil

I am on Tezspire since April 2024 and it has changed my life.I haven't had a single steroid for my asthma since March 27th 2024.

It is a lifesaver both mentally and physically.
