Hi Trace58Sorry! Long reply x

Have you tried a nebuliser? With 0.9% saline in it, you can buy them from amazon, they're not expensive, and along with breathing physio and huffing (Google it) twice a day x it can help bringing up the mucus x

I ended up paying on a credit card for a private diagnosis, like you my GP was totally uninterested in alleviating my constant distress at not being able to breath, added to by feeling like i was always wheezing and drowning in sticky green goop on my chest that would only come up and go away briefly when I was on doxycycline and prednisolone, neither of which they would give to me after the first few months!! I honestly think they thought I was making it up!!

It turns out I have late onset Eosinophilic asthma, a severe, difficult to control type of asthma, a simple blood test showing eosinophils above 1 are the marker for diagnosis, trouble is gp's have never heard of it!!!!

Carbocisteine is a good help in my routine, it helps make the goop less sticky, so easier (in theory 🙄🤣) to bring up. After paying for private treatment for a year (it kept me alive!) I'm finally under an nhs consultant at the addenbrookes severe asthma clinic, and have the support and meds at home that keep me going the best I can.

I'm sorry you are having to suffer, your not alone, unfortunately my three year traumatic experience shows me exactly how little gp's know (or care) and how crucial consultant diagnosis and care is.

Sending lots of good wishes, I hope you get the help you need to start feeling better very soon x

Some people are triggered by saline nebulisers so please be careful.

Did you have asthma before being diagnosed with eosinophillic asthma?

Hi,No absolutely nothing wrong with me, i was a fit and healthy 49 year old woman working full time, until July 2021, started getting breathlessness when walking and talking, gp spent a year trying to work out why fostair 100 and/or 200 weren't helping, eventually referred me to severe asthma clinic at addenbrookes, and then shut their door on me do i had no support or help, I got so poorly while waiting (a year +) in Dec 2022 we paid for a private diagnosis and treatment at Spire in Cambridge, to keep me going until the NHS referral came in March this year, even now the gp won't touch me, says I don't fit in their boxes 🙁 thank god for the super support I'm now getting from clinic 2a at addenbrookes 😊

Have you been referred to a respiratory consultant. With all the steroids you have been on, sounds like you should be on consultant care.

Have a chat with a nurse on the asthma UK helpline on 0300 2225800, office hours.

Ask the nurses on the asthma UK helpline for how to ask and what to ask for.

There are many consultants out there.

Have u tried reducing nacys to see if it helps - I'm on carbocysteine.sometimes when mucous is thinned and lungs feel flooded with mucous, i have to periodically knock it off for cpl days.i also take 2types of antihistamines and a steroid nasal spray for rhinosinusitis.i also use sterimar breathe easy daily when bad.it does help.ru on mart with fostair? Do u use salbutamol for wheeze/ tight chest? Take a look on aluk website at lung clearance techniques eg huffing/acbt/postural drainage etc.

I am extra wary because they once gave me a saline neb in A&E and ended up coughing, wheezing and my chest ended up tighter than when I went in.It works for some people.

I resorted to buying a flutter. I use it every morning as the mucus is so hard to clear then. Cough, cough, cough and just didn’t clear. Once you get used to using the flutter it does help. I found this one on Amazon. You don’t have to spend an arm and a leg on one.
