Hello, I think there are many on another forum on here called 'Lung Conditions Community.'

I have had several 16 week courses of Azithromycin, instead of Prednisolone, to treat asthma flare ups. I just don't respond well to Prednisolone as I have non-eosinophilic asthma. Azithromycin works very well for me, without any side effects. It really depends on what your inflammation pathways are as to what your asthma consultant will recommend.

Hi

Yes I do… have done for many years.

Works pretty well for my asthma but I have to be careful of my stomach with it.

So I take it every day for 6 days then 1 day off. I have also now begun to take it just over the winter months, whereas I used to take it all year round.

I hope it works for well for you. I think it’s a sensible asthma add on if you can get your cons to prescribe it.

😊

Hi Pipsqueak77 - odd, my wife is on a take one on Monday, Wednesday, Friday regimen that suits her well - not heard of 6 days on, 1 off .. reserved for winter months - she has an idiopathic bronchiectasis.

Hi Yetti1

I have it only for asthma, alongside biologics etc.

I take 250mg per dose but over six days instead of three days at 500mg. This is to help my stomach deal with the side effects.

I just find it a little more gentle that way.

My cons lets me decide when I wish to take it depending on my asthma symptoms. Initially it was all year round but after starting the biologic I find I only really need it during the colder weather.

😊

Yes as a prophylactic

Yes I take it as a prophylactic 3 times a week in winter and during exacerbations to prevent pneumonia. Fingers crossed I had an exacerbation in October and it’s the first time I haven’t got pneumonia in 3 years! What are you on it for?

I'm on Clarithromycin prophylactic. 250mgs twice daily every day. Been on it over 2 years.

Yes, I take 500mg three times a week as a prophylactic. It has really helped me.

I was prescribed it as a prophylactic 3 times a week and it worked well. However after 18 months I mentioned that I had tinnitus and the consultant said it is a side effect of Azithromycin so I had to stop it immediately. I’ve since tried Doxycycline everyday but that caused me stomach issues so I had to stop that as well. Apparently there isn’t another prophylactic antibiotic to try so I am waiting to be seen by Host Defence. Has anyone else experienced these problems ?

Doxycline gives me terrible stomach problems at the high dose. I'm on Clarithromycin as prophylactic from my consultant at tertiary clinic. It has helped in that my exacerbations are less frequent, for trips to A&E.

Thank you. I’ll ask if that’s an option for me. 😀

Yes, with your asthma I've a propensity to chest infection (why I got the add on of small airways disease and CFS). I'm prescribed prophylactic Azithromycin 250mgs to take Mon Wed & Fridays from November to April. Works a treat in helping to prevent infections brewing - for me anyway.

I spent years hating winter, knowing I would have infection after infection. New consultant changed me to Azithromycin and although have had infections not severe ones. I take them all year and have not needed rescue meds for over two years.

Yes. I have been put on three times a week azithromycin for the whole of the winter by my respiratory consultant. My asthma is slightly out of control at the moment.

Yes! 1 tablet three days a week. Been on it for a few years - I love it, without it I didn't have a laugh and couldn't call/shout etc because everything turned into a cough.
