I have copd. Diagnosed 18 yrs ago. I get awful panic attacks in the night. I'm a smoker and wish desperately that I could stop.

Hello! Welcome to this very friendly and fun group. Many people here have copd & at a guess I’d say most of them have a smoking history. You’ll get all the support you need with your condition. Just ask - there’s no such thing as a silly question. I think there’s a Quit group too which you could join.

Why not tell us a bit more about yourself? You can read my story (if you want to) by clicking on my profile, but I don’t have copd so it’s not very relevant to you x

Hello CLM55, welcome. ☺️

What is tops please?

Asthma + Lung uk also run another group on here called Lung Conditions Community, You can join both. There are a fair few people in both groups. You may find more people on that one with COPD. Both groups are great.

I hope you can find support and suggestions to help you.

Have you tried ringing the ALUK helpline at all? Details below.

Hello! First of all be gentle towards yourself, smoking is a long time habit and it takes a lot of will power to overcome. While keeping in mind to be compassionate and gentle with yourself do your best to approach this. Nicotine consumption brings dopamine to the brain and dopamine is a good thing. Might there be some other non harmful activities that you like and bring you dopamine? Make a plan, sometimes a plan lasts two months sometimes two years, as long as you don't give up new ways of dealing with your issue will come forward. Consider you are dealing with a serious challenge, do not underestimate the hardness of this project. Keep your optimism up even when you might fail, because other ways how could one get up and start again. Sometimes people around you are supportive, sometimes they are not supportive, this should not take you away from your path. This is my experience from fighting a sedentary way of life combined with a lot of food (quite dopamine bringing as well). I wish you a lot of inner peace and good luck!

Hi, based on my experience as an ex smoker, you not only want to give up but you need to dislike smoking! I tried a few times but not successfully until I thought about smoking and gradually got to a point where I disliked smoking, the taste and smell on my cloths, but I was still addicted. So I went to speak to a pharmacist about the best patches to use then about 2-3 weeks later I could give up the patches now smoke free for 20+ years. But I believe the wanting to stop has to be backed up with a dislike. Good luck.
