hello everyone 😊. I was diagnosed with asthma over 6 months ago and I have had 2 chest infections in that time. One was Christmas time while i had Covid. the current one I have now has hit me a little harder. Does anyone here get chest infections more due to asthma? And have you noticed anything that has triggered it? Like different inhalers

Appreciate your feedback 😊

Sorry to hear you have been poorly. I have asthma and bronchietasis. Over the last couple of years I seem to have become more susceptible to viruses and infections. At the moment I am recovering from a chest infection. Speak to your Gp or respiratory nurse who generally very helpful. There are so many options to try but it can take a bit time as it can take weeks to see if it works.

There are so many things that can trigger asthma, initially i kept some notes of my day and how I felt etc. I have figured out some triggers but it can still a bit random.

I used to keep a diary of my peak flow reading, my asthma attacks and possible triggers.

This was really useful in picking up my asthma triggers.

Very common triggers are dust mites, pollen, wet windy weather, detergents.

I wash bed clothes at 60c, do my best to clean and declutter house, use air purifiers, and use non perfumed detergents. It all helps.

You can have a blood test for your asthma triggers.

Explore the asthma UK website and if you need a chat re your asthma ring their helpline on 0300 2225800.

A diary can be very helpful. Blood tests potentially less so as they are limited to specific trigger types. They can pick up allergic triggers (or not...mine didn't), but many asthma triggers don't really have an associated marker you can find in a blood test or another test.

Observation/diary may be the way forward, though I also found you have to be open to other possibilities as sometimes the symptoms can be due to something other than the obvious cause. I thought I had developed a cat allergy when it was actually paint!

Hello,Before I found the right strength inhaler (and properly diagnosed) I would get chest infections very regularly. Covid always seems to cause a chest infection!

There has been some stubborn infections this year but more often than not my Fostair inhaler usually helps prevent infection setting in. It can take a while for inhalers to be effective and once run down I find it harder to fight off viruses. Vitamin D helps!

I've had asthma since I was seven...and I used to get chest infections at least twice a year. After 27 years I don't get them often as my asthma is pretty well controlled. Chest infection are more common then you think, but for healthy lungs it's often just seen as a bad cold and heals on it's own. Because asthmatic lungs are chronically inflamed, we are very susceptible. Getting the right dosage of preventative inhaler is really helpful. Also try to figure out your triggers so you can avoid them as much as possible. Smoke, dust, exercise and chemicals in cleaners are my big triggers and very common ones.

I seem to be getting chest infections every month this last one has landed me in hospital. I am a lifelong ashmatic & several years ago wad diagnosed with copd & a ct a couple of years ago showed up Emphysema. I only used to get a couple of chest infections a year but recently as I said earlier monthly it is really affecting g my mental health. I don't know what to blame. Could just be I'm getting older I have had 2 bad doses of covid so don't know what to think except I'm sick of it my age is 67.

Yes I started getting recurring chest infections about 8-9 years ago (I also had them bad and recurring as a child) after being back and two with doctors, specialists, nurses and test after test I finally got diagnosed with Excessive Dynamic Airway Colapse.... it normally comes alongside adthma or COPD and I was diagnosed Asthma as a child... they are struggling to "prove" the asthma Part, but the EDAC was confirmed with dynamic CT and dynamic Xray.
