Woodburning stoves

Does anybody else with Asthma find that when you smell them in the open air they affect your breathing, somebody near to me has now got one and I have got to the stage where I wont even walk out into my garden. x

Yep. Bane of my life. Well, one of them. Moving into the season of struggling to balance opening windows for “fresh” air and to keep the house aired to reduce build up of condensation and damp vs much greater prevalence of wood smoke. Grrrrrr. Plugging in air purifiers….

Yep, we're in a rural area and everyone has them. They are also burning pallets and any old wood, including treated wood 🙄. Our office is in the garage and by 4 - 5 o'clock the coughing starts. Wood burners plus bonfires, and fire pits are the bane of my life and why I have two air purifiers. xx

Yes! I love to walk in our local (huge) park but at this time of year there are some estate cottages that have wood burning stoves so I have got used to carrying a spare KN95 mask and if I smell the smoke I whip it out and put it on until we are out of range. Thanks to the pandemic this is not viewed as so weird. Bonfires are also a pain but luckily there is usually just one elderly neighbour who does it but it somehow gets in the house even with all windows closed. I put a mask on then and I also have a Winnix air purifier which helps a bit.

Yep, absolutely hate them! My lungs go into shutdown at the first whiff. They mooted banning them before Covid, wish they had. Totally antisocial and selfish, esp. bonfires when we have a recycle tip minutes away. I love my fresh air, so do my lungs, now can't open windows though somehow smoke still gets in.🤷‍♀️

Oh how I agree. In summer it's bonfires and barbeques and as soon as autumn is here, the woodburners get flashed up. The smoke and particulates being belched out are no joke to us who are at risk of repsiratory diseases.

Me too. As energy prices increase they are becoming more popular 😭

Also, I suspect that with the rising cost of living, more people will be burning pallets, wooden scraps, green wood etc, because if they are turning to an open fire or woodburner because they can't afford central heating, they probably can't afford properly kiln-dried wood or the new low-emission burners either.

I am one more. I can agree with many posts above. For me it is not only wood, but also roasting something on the oven, bread being toasted and so on. I ‘sanitised’ the house a couple of years back, got myself a multi cooker and now very rarely use the oven. It has certainly helped, so I generally don’t react quite so strongly.
