Hello. I’m booked to go into hospital next week for IV antibiotics for up to two weeks as I’ve had so many chest infections including a pseudanoma infection which is tricky to get rid of without IV. This is my first time having to do this and I’m not sure what to expect. Will the antibiotics make me feel unwell in themselves..!? If anyone is also at Barts from the 15th May let me know and we can have a bedside chat! Fingers crossed it won’t get cancelled. Thanks all.

hospital admission for ‘eradication’

I’ve had lots of admissions for anti-pseudomonal IVs, and also done them myself at home. You might be able to do that once you’ve had a few days in. I’ve not had much trouble with the drugs, usually feel ok, just a bit wiped out. I take probiotics to protect my gut (show them to the pharmacist). You can get a reaction to any new med so tell someone immediately if you get a rash or something.
Unfortunately I’ve never managed to eradicate the pseudo in 20+ yrs but it’s well controlled by nebulised colomycin and I only need IVs during a flare up (maybe 1-2 courses yearly). It’s a nuisance tho
I've been in a couple times for ivs for pseudamonas. The first time was scary as I hate hospitals, and I did feel unwell on the ivs (still well enough to go up and down the stairs, and walk around the hospital for exercise). I was also put on nebulised Colomycin. After 2 years and 3 negative sputum samples I came off the Colomycin. It was so worth it to be able to breathe more easily. The second time, I reacted to one of the ivs again and did feel poorly, so I was switched to a different one and felt absolutely fine on it. So do speak up if you feel ill on them. Again, I was put back on nebulised Colomycin, and they added in oral Azithromycin. After a couple years and numerous negative sputum tests, I came off the Colomycin again (been almost 2 years now), but remain on the Azithromycin 9 out 12 months a year.
So yes, although hard to completely eradicate pseudamonas, the ivs make a huge difference and are well worth doing. The stupidest side effect is, now when I walk into the hospital it feels like my second home😂
