Can exercise trigger symptoms days later?

Hi, I've just started doing cross fit classes which are really intense. Did a class a couple of days ago and did need my ventolin but was ok. Two days later I woke up with tight chest (PF was down) but not aware of any triggers so I'm wondering if it's a late reaction to the stress I put on my lungs at xfit. I've read that exercise induced asthma can happen hours after the event but can it be days? Has anyone come across this or experienced it?

Thanks

my asthma is allergen based but if I exercise, in a stressed situation, such as running to catch a bus, I can have an worsening of my asthma for a few days after that.

hi catbutler

I feel it can but have no scientific evidence in fact I probably did to much on Tuesday and have felt bad since (but could be I am getting another chest infection)

However I often find myself getting worse if I do too much but this could be because I should have excercised more carefully.?

Perhaps a chat with your Asthma nurse or GP or the helpline

It’s important to excercise so this is an important question

Thanks Muldrew, I think I probably do need to pace myself better, which is not what CrossFit us about!

Hi, I could have written this post! I love CrossFit but it does trigger my symptoms. I had a very useful conversation with my asthma nurse who advised taking my blue inhaler before each class because I know it is a trigger for me (…obviously talk to your own nurse because your situation might be different but it’s been helpful for me) Also I recommend talking to your CrossFit coach about scaling options for the workout. My coach was SUPER helpful and supportive about making the workout suit how I was feeling. The CrossFit community is very supportive generally and I hope you continue to enjoy it!

I take my inhaler for the class and was OK on the day but woke up on Thursday with tight chest and reduced PF. Sadly my asthma nurse is not very good, might talk to an Asthma UK nurse. I used to have a PT which was great, she adapted my workouts to cope with my lungs. The cross fit coaches are fab and give scaling options but its the AMRAPs that are problematic, if you don't go for it that sort of misses the point of cross fit!!

I find exercise can cause symptoms but regular exercise at a decent intensity can for me strengthen my lungs and reduce the symptoms long term, but after a break I'm back to square 1 😩
