Asthma / wheeziness getting worse

I’m struggling. I have had asthma but mild since i was 8 years old I’m now 32. Around 5 years ago my breathing / wheeziness started to get much worse. I’ve been on Combisal 25micrograms 2 puffs twice a day with a spacer since then and not improving, my peak flow remains around 550 consistently. I have also been allergy tested, found i have some usual dust mite / hayfever allergies and i was put on 180mg fexofenadene for that.

But i wake up today again feeling like i have dust in my windpipe, breathing i can feel a wheeze there and feels like I’m breathing dust constantly like something is always irritating my windpipe.

I should say i have seen doctors and asthma nurses ect and they have referred me to see a respiratory medicine consultant however there is a 33 week wait. I just don’t know what else to do to help how I’m feeling.

Any advice to help me cope would be grateful, I’ve been using Vicks vapour and also nasal sprays / inhalers too.

No worries at all, i know how busy you must be there! The WhatsApp idea was fab, whoever responded to me replied straight away and was super helpful 😊

Vicks vapor might be a problem; Vicks is an oil and oils are problematic for lungs. They can’t handle them. If you can smell it you are inhaling it. As for your other meds: even though one has been successfully on a medication before, an intolerance can occur at any time.

Work with your asthma nurse if possible.

Retired US nurse anesthetist here.

I'm with Karenjaninaz on this - maybe hold off on the Vicks for a bit and see what happens. Some people can handle it but others can't, and it may be making things worse. I don't react well to a lot of plants in any form including natural plant and essential oils. I also don't do well with steam, though others are ok with it.

Would it be helpful to try the WhatsApp for the nurses if you can't get through on the phone? Same hours - 07378 606728

Thanks for the comments 😊 the Vicks i am just putting on chest or around nose and i find it leads helps funnily enough, especially over night as in this heat in the U.K. at the moment i find my bedroom can get very stuffy so the Vicks is helping my breathing, i seem to be much better over night weirdly, only feeling breathless when i wake up early morning 4/5/6am. I will keep trying the asthma line as well, my gp and asthma nurse can’t suggest anything more and that’s what they said they have referred me for, so think they’re at a loss now of next steps 🙁

Make sure you drink plenty of water, and when you do, take the opportunity to slow your breathing; breathe deeper and relax as far as possible. It's no cure, but it should help a tiny bit.
