Prednisone

So I'm on pred at the moment for a different disorder flare (MCAS specifically). I've never been on it for my asthma, but whilst I've only been on it a couple of days I was able to not use Ventolin today. Is that normal for it to work that quick? Or was today just a "good" day (still symptomatic, but didn't really go yellow today!).

A couple of days is pretty normal I think for it to be kicking in, sometimes takes longer but people taking it for asthma would be hoping it would be kicking in after a couple of days. Some say it kicks in within a few hours but well lucky them 🤣

I’ve been on prednisone for asthma many many times. For me it kicks in within the same day (lucky). Hope you’re doing better🙂

Glad to hear it works pretty quick for you! I wasn't aware it'd work that quick!

Do you know the reason that you flared up? Have you distanced yourself from your allergens or distanced yourself from a source of pollution or has a possible chest infection cleared up?

I was put on pred (very short term!) for my MCAS as I typically react poorly to vaccines and I had to restart the vaccine process with Pfizer a few days ago (originally had AZ back in January as I'm CEV), so it was prescribed as a precaution to me by my allergist for safety. However, I'm basically constantly in and out of yellow in terms of my peak flow with my asthma and symptomatic a lot with that too, it just so happened that the pred seems to have also helped my asthma, which makes sense, because my asthma is pretty awful right now.

I do my best to distance my self from allergens as I tend to react pretty heavily to them due to my allergies and MCAS, and I have been in London this week (unfortunately!), so pollution was probably unhelpful. No chest infection as far as I can tell.

Have a GP appointment tomorrow, so will chat with them about it as I don't see my resp. consultant til August (AN is in July though, so will tell them too).

Grass allergy is high at the moment; my asthma (& eczema & hayfever!) got really bad a couple of weeks ago. Try your best to minimise your time next to traffic but yup, its difficult to avoid in London!

Good luck with everything.

Hi floating. Ive been on pred quite a few times for severe asthma flare up (sometimes with anti bs for chest infection) and find that it works quickly, usually a day or two, to control my asthma without having to use Ventolin. I also now have COPD and pred will help control this a little also. Unfortunately, we cant use this steroid too often. Do try to stay away from heavy traffic areas if you can, as this is one of the worst triggers. Good luck!!
