Nightime Breathlessness

Hi

I regularly waken during the night distressed, gasping for air, feeling like I can't breathe.

Could this be related to my asthma?

Or just night mares?

Not pleasant either way!

Has anyone else had this with asthma?

Thanks x

It could be related to your asthma. It might not be but you need to contact your GP as it needs checking out in case it is asthma.

As Mariachristina76 said, my first thought was that this could be sleep apnoea. Though as you say, nightmares can spark all sorts of strong responses and night time allergies can also cause an issue (particularly if your nose gets really dry and stuffy and you're sleeping with your mouth closed). Worth booking in with your GP as if by any chance it is regular sleep apnoea they often like to make sure you're being looked after so it doesn't cause any issues with blood pressure etc.

Thankyou for your reply. I haven't been to g.p as I thought it wasn't serious enough. But reading the replies here have changed my perception. I thought it might have been night terrors.

I hope the replies haven't panicked you, there's the chance it's still something like night terrors. And even with sleep apnoea there are mild cases that don't require treatment. And any treatment isn't always major either! 😊

Could it be reflux? This happens to me and it’s from reflux.

Oh, that’s interesting 🤔. I might try gaviscon before bed for a couple of weeks.

Hi, thanks for replying. I don't think so, as I never suffer from heartburn or eat anything that causes it.

Silent reflux doesn't give heartburn etc though, hence its name - and what might trigger it is personal so it could be anything causing it in any one person.

Ah, thats very interesting. Something I'd never heard of. Will keep that in my list of elimations thanks.

Hi, sleep apnoea can be a killer.

It tried to kill me many times a few years ago. long term sleep apnoea can damage your heart .

I did not know at the time but i developed heart block, a problem with electrical system which controls your heart beat. I my case my heart would just stop beating for a bit. This combined with stopping to breath (sleep apnoea) was basically like being a bit dead.

lucky i always came round but the panic, not being able to breath, was truly terrifying.

Saying you cant breath automatically puts you on the asthma track. It took almost a year of 999 calls to get sorted. Pace maker & CPAP machine. Problem solved.

Regards

Thanks for your reply. I've had 999 call outs in the past. Eventually diagnosed with P.O.T.S. These current symptoms are different from pots though!

Glad your problem has been sorted.
