A question about oral thrush

I am prone to oral thrush. Currently I manage it with the usual gargling and rinsing, and I use salt water. By and large it works. However, I am shortly about to start a three month course of an antibiotic and that could unbalance it. Apart from gargling and rinsing with plain water/salt water/Listerine and brushing the oral cavity, does anyone have any further tricks up their sleeve how to manage it? I am on an MDI with a spacer. The antibiotics are for another reason than asthma.

Use interdentals as part of your tooth brushing routine (I use three different sizes, dependent on the gaps between various teeth) and, once a day, dental floss if you’re not doing that already.

Good point! I already do, but I can up the frequency a bit.

Hi Wheezycat. I posted a very similar question over on the BLF forum about a week ago and there was some great advice. Too much to summarise here. If you look at my profile, I think it’ll show up! Hope you get some relief- it’s awful. X

Hi, thank you for your suggestion. I can’t describe mine as ‘awful’, for me so far it is more about vigilance as I am undoubtedly prone. But if anything is out of balance it tends to recur, so 3 months of a low dose antibiotic worries me. Unfortunately I can’t get hold of that post.....unless I can on the BLF site, which I haven’t yet tried. But I will see if I can access it there somehow.

I did find it all on that site! Thank you! Happily it all coincides with what I was planning for myself anyway to manage the impact on my gut. Live yoghurt daily, maybe acidophilus supplements, fermented foods.........and another attempt to cut out not just some, but all sugars. Cut out ? Maybe not unless really needed. I am far more of a veg eater anyway. I hope to avoid anything medicated whether they are OTC or not.

Great! Glad you found it. I agree- not too keen on the repeat fluconazole myself but nothing else seems to touch it. Unfortunately I have to stick with the DPI this time too so need to find something that helps. I’ll keep you updated if I have any joy. X
