I’ve always had asthma due to having pneumonia when I was a baby in and out off hospital when I was a kid can remember having serious attacks which prevented me from going to a main stream school unit I was about 11, lots of hospital stays, I’m 40 now, never really taken care off myself since I was a teenager been smoking since I was 15 and I don’t mean just cigarettes use your imagination, did give up when I had the copd diagnosis 5yrs ago for 3 years, now smoking again. been reading a lot on hear about using my blue inhaler more than 4 times a day to get help, I do generally get prednisone increase my preventer inhalers (2) etc, never really get better still a constant wheeze very out off breath, I know my future if I don’t change my habits, I feel like I need to call a ambulance when I’m in bed wheezing even after taking my meds, it’s constant, feel really guilty getting help I’m doing this to myself so don’t want to waste the time off the nhs, feel this is my ‘way out’ off life told this to the crisis team (mental health) well that’s another story,

So what to do, call for help next time I’m having a attack or stay as I am an controlling it myself like I’ve been doing all my life,

I’m sorry I’m new to the site and have a query ? asthma diagnosis so don’t have a lot of advice on breathing issues as yet but hopefully someone will give some great advice. You won’t be wasting the NHS’s time, you deserve to have treatment etc to help you feel better! We’ve all done things in the past, but you’re wanting to get healthy now so that’s great.

I am overweight now so I need to get healthy too 🤞

To be honest you need to do both - look after yourself long term but still call for help when you need it acutely. If ventolin isn't lasting 4 hours then you definitely need to seek help from an asthma point if view - but it could be that some of your breathlessness and wheezing is down to smoking. It would be sensible to discuss this with your GP or asthma nurse as they'll be able to help determine what's what and to formulate a plan to stop smoking if that's what you want to do.
