Asthma and Finger Nails

Hi all,

I have a very random question. I’ve noticed that my finger nails are very thin and curl up at the ends. I put this down to chemical damage from having back to back gel manicures.

I just read an article saying that this is actually a symptom of a lack of oxygen due to conditions such as asthma.

Have any of you heard of this or experience similar?

It could also be a calcium deficiency as I was told certain asthma medication block out calcium from being absorbed properly as well as other vitamins it happened to me and I needed to take calcium tablets. See if you can get blood tests to see if you are lacking any vitamins as so far because of the medication I have been lacking in calcium, folic acid, vitamin D and phosphate

Ah yes, that would make perfect sense too. Thank you! My diet hasn’t been fantastic this year anyway, so I know that there are things I can do to help too

I know that feeling my diet is terrible I’m surprised I don’t have an iron deficiency too 😂 hope you get the answers your looking for but definitely ask if you can get a full blood count to check your immuglobins (or however you spell it) and white blood count as well as vitamins and if there is any abnormalities you will get the right treatment and feel amazing 😊

Calcium won't be properly absorbed if your VitD3 levels are low. Anyone who has missed out on their usual exposure to the sun because of the lockdown, may need additional VitD3 & VitK (they work together). Then there's magnesium, which also helps with the facilitation of VitD3.

You can have your VitD3 levels checked, if you're lucky your GP will get your bloods done. Otherwise, there are home testing kits. Once you know your levels, you can take a dose appropriate to you.

Recently there's been a slew of articles about VitD3 and its importance to the immune system. If your levels are good, you shouldn't need additional calcium as your diet should be enough.

Yes my nails are very thin and weak but didn't know it was due to Asthma but I've been taking vit D and calcium since Covid started and its helped my nails to grow but they are not strong.

I had a gel manicure for a family wedding at the beginning of March. It was my first time. Anyway my nails were thin and soft once I removed the polish. Now, a few months down the line they are back to their normal.

Maybe another factor, as you suggested in your post?

Meantime like other suggestions I have been taking vitD3 for a couple of months too after reading articles about its benefits
