That is shocking Nabs. They have a duty of care and this is a case of negligence.

I would write a letter to the headteacher outlining what has happened and explaining that you have complied with school policy by informing them of your child’s condition and supplying them with a rescue inhaler to be used in exactly this situation.

Make sure you ask for a written reply.

Did they say why they didn't?

Can you call your GP or asthma nurse and ask them?

School should follow a plan for giving inhalers (we used to have care plans for all children with asthma) but it may be they don't understand that the coughing is the asthma (a lot of people think it's just wheezing but, more often with children in my experience, it's coughing). Or that they decided coughing=possible covid. Although if the inhaler stopped it I would say it's asthma but 🤷 - and they still might want covid ruled out.

But I would ask GP or asthma nurse for urgent advice and a plan to give to school - and explain that you've tried to do this but they did not give him his inhaler.

Wow! That could have had catastrophic results. Sounds like they need to review their policies and ensure ALL staff know what to do. Push push push to ensure they do x

When I worked in a first school we had a photo and plan for every child who had any special needs displayed in the staff room.

Most schools will have a few children with asthma and an increasing amount with allergies who may need treatment at school.

In our school all staff had annual training to use an epi pen for allergies and inhalers for asthma. It’s really not difficult but vital and also an understanding of when a parent or ambulance should be called
