Hi everyone!

Does anyone suffer with the above?

I have eosinophilic asthma and exercise a lot....weights/HIIT etc and I just don’t know if asthma has made my chest weak and prone to this? I ve had it on/off for a few months now.

Thank you 😊

Did it last long with you? Mine is like an ache and feels sore under the chest. Last night going to bed felt like pressure on my chest! Horrible!! 😫

Yes, I had it recently - very painful and it made my asthma symptoms worse as I couldn’t breathe in too deeply. It lasted around four weeks

It maybe worth seeing a physio. They will be able to help you recover from the Chostocondritis and give you specific advice on weight lifting etc that may help you avoid future injury. It's amazing how much we depend on those rib muscles so we need to look after them.

I’ve had it and it was crazy painful, it lasted for months but eventually went on it’s own, my 14yo also had it after a bout of pleurisy for a couple of months and ended up on anti- flammatory medication.

I too have suffered from costochondritis for several years, probably had it before my asthma worsened. It is incredibly painful, mine was often triggered by stretching forwards ie shaving my legs in the bath! It was like one (or two) of my ribs ’popped’ out! The initial pain took my breath away but it would feel very bruised and swollen for a couple of weeks after. Having chest infections, asthma exasperations and pleurisy all made it worse. I never really got much respite from the pain by taking anti inflammatories or pain meds but the biggest relief has come from losing weight! I’m only 5’2” and was sliding into needing to buy a size 14 but I joined a gym and have lost 2.5 stone and got back to wearing a size 10. My costochondritis has HUGELY improved! Good luck, it really is painful .

I got it when I cracked a rib and it took many months to clear. Very very gentle hug

Hi everyone! I m still suffering but just also wanted to know if anyone too anti inflammatory tablets and if this helped? Or did you have steroids/ steroid injection?

Also mine feels like very sore ribs on my left side, not so much in the middle of the chest. I also feel inflammation in my back...in between my ribs! Is this normal?!! Thank you 😊

Hi, sorry to hear about your costochondritis. It is very painful as you are probably already aware of. I thought I was having a heart attack or some cardiac event. Had every test under the sun finally came to the diagnosis of costochondritis.

I'm an avid weight lifter and this has made it quite difficult but I am stubborn and not willing to give up my years of progress made to this condition. Ibuprofen does work for me but it's very short term. Keeping hydrated making sure I'm drinking plenty of fluids also seems to help. Warm baths seem to relax the muscles which also takes the pain away to a certain degree. Stress and anxiety will also make it worse so try to work on lowering stress levels.

Hope that helps some.

Thank you so much for your reply...I know I definitely did this through my garage weight workout!! I was lifting quite heavy and I think I really did something very wrong as it’s not just my chest it’s my back now too! Feels muscular.

I am so annoyed as I can’t cope with not exercising...that stresses me out!! 🤦🏼‍♀️

Did you so do any alternative exercise and how long did it take to pass?

I will def try warm baths and I did try ibuprofen for a few days which helped my muscles but gave me stomach cramps!! Aghhh! Nightmare!

Thanks 😊

I think part of my issue is that my gym floor downstairs is a bit uneven and while benching it put more of a strain on one side and over time it has aggravated my ribs and sternum. I noticed pull ups make it extremely sore and if I load up too much weight on back squats ot presses down on rib cage and I will be extremely sore the next day. I had to lighten the weight and increase reps and intensity. The only issue is it's harder to breathe with costochondritis. I did order what is called the * backpod* some guy from New Zealand invented it and he goes into great detail explaining the condition. I also believe my costo is aggravated from stomach issues so I'm on a non inflammatory diet via no dairy no gluten and it has seemed to help.

Basically I've accepted the pain and will choose to train even if it doesn't get better. There's not a lot of info out there about this condition or treatment options which is quite disheartening so I'm still playing by ear with what helps and what makes it worse.

Thanks again for all of that info! Yes I have heard of the back pod! I’ll look into.,

Also I have acid reflux and I have also noticed that I have had to up my medication for that as it seems worse with this problem too. Although my health anxiety kicks in with this chest problem and I am sure that makes the acid worse too!🤦🏼‍♀️

I am trying my hardest to stay calm and rest....well waking & a bit of yoga!! But it’s killing not to do my full exercise regime! Just really hoping it just does one ASAP as I think any tests will top me over the edge! 😫

Thanks again 👍🏻

Also, I would stay away from steroid injections, over time they will further weaken your joints and ligaments.

If you find anything out that helps please let me know because this condition sucks lol.
