Quercetin studies

I wanted to reach out to this community to see if anyone has heard about Quercetin Supplements?

I found some fascinating studies about Quercetin. It's a bioflavonoid found in fruits, you can get high dosages of it via supplementation. Some studies have shown that Quercetin has a bronchodilator effect and has the potential to improve allergic Asthma.

Here are a couple studies:

pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/214...

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl...

Moreover there is research being done with Quercetin as a possible treatment and prophylactic for Covid19. I have seen a few studies that claimed optimism based on how it reacted to other viruses, not claiming a cure or even if it offers protection but I'd thought I would share this info with the community.

Thank you,

Mike

I haven’t tried this, but it is very interesting. I have just scanned the articles and see it is present in apples. I read somewhere that eating apples was beneficial to people with asthma. Now I know why. I will read this in more detail later. Thank you for posting this.

Hiya Mike, Yes I have heard of Quercetin and wondered myself whether to try it for my Asthma and also look for foods that contain it XX

Yes, I've tried Quercetin for quite a while but it didn't make a jot of difference to my asthma.

Other than supplements it seems it is in all sorts of veg and fruit. Onion is a big one. So it seems if we have a diet with 5 a day we should be getting some. But I suppose it is about quantities.

No idea it Quercetin helps directly with asthma.

Though evidence for benefits of Quercetin for covid-19 is missing, the theory seems to be that it ‘might’ act as an ionophore for zinc. (Which basically means that, if you are also supplementing zinc in appropriate amounts, it is ‘hoped’ that quercetin - by altering the zinc ions - may help get zinc inside cells and disrupt any cellular RNA Replication resulting from the virus). There are some serious technical challenges to that theory. So, untested science, but a ‘maybe’ given Quercetin’s molecular structure suggests ‘possible’ ionophore potential. I’ve not come across anything that suggests Quercetin ‘on its own’ might be useful for covid-19, but there may be info I’ve missed. It’s also the case that most Quercetin formulations are poorly absorbed, so another challenge there.

A similar ‘ionophore’ theory has been put forward for the medicine Hydroxychloroquine, which seems to be considered a ‘stronger candidate’ for altering zinc ions, and thereby giving zinc cellular access. Where covid-19 is concerned, Hydroxychloroquine also has two or three other modes of potential therapeutic action, independent of zinc (which is why it’s currently being investigated as a possible treatment). At present, some doubt has begun to creep in over Hydroxychloroquine’s likely value, but it may bounce back as part of a covid treatment regime, once the numerous clinical trials for it (in relation to covid-19) have been completed.

Note, zinc, on its own, doesn’t normally appear to enter cells easily, if at all, but it’s a supplement widely taken by many folk. (Not suggesting that anyone should use it, without first seeking medical advice). It’s not even certain that zinc would enter the ‘right part’ of cells if it’s entry was facilitated by ionophore modification of it’s ions.
