Ideally, you need your NHS number (on a prescription or hospital letter), but you can register with out.

just to point out if that only applies if you live in England .. you have to phone different numbers for Scotland.. if you got the letter from the chief medical officer the number to text will be at the top of the letter ...text it with your CHI number which is also at the top of the letter
