Family member wants to work

Hello everyone,

I have mild to moderate asthma, recently increased dosage to 2 puffs twice a day of sereflo 125/25. My mum has decided she wants to work in a supermarket during this crisis and is adamant that it doesn't bring an additional risk as long as she washes her hands. I'm of the opinion that because I'm in a moderately vulnerable category, this would be an unnecessary risk and shouldn't be done. I was wondering what others' opinions are on this?

Thanks

I’m with you on this one Rolo. I don’t really see the point in taking unnecessary risks. No doubt if your mum did take this job she would do as much as she could to make sure that she does not bring the virus into the home and I do appreciate that she wants to do her bit.

Perhaps she doesn’t quite understand the risk to you. Once asthma is well controlled it is easy to forget that a person has it, or how dangerous an attack can be.

The risk here is that if you caught the virus you would not only be fighting off a very nasty chest infection, but that your airways might also react causing even more difficulty breathing.

If your mum was to take this job she would also need to practice stringent social distancing within the home, staying at least 2m away from you at all times etc.

My advice would be to try and dissuade your mum from doing this, but if she goes ahead self isolate in your bedroom as much as possible, wash your hands frequently etc.

Let your mum have a read through this site and follow the links to government information.

If she insists as Troilus says you must follow the 2 meter rule. But I would also add she could have virus in her hair and on her clothes. At the very least she could wear some clothing on top of that that covers her, including her hair. She can launder the moment she comes home and have a shower. Virus can be all over her. Not official guidelines I know but isn’t it common sense?

One of my friend put her shopping outside for 72 hrs even wiping letters. You can go over the top with the cleaning.

I do not know the reason why your mum wants to work . I understand your concerns. Do your best to dissuade her as you are in the vulnerable group.? Most likely to pick the virus in supermarkets. It will add to your anxiety and might trigger an asthma attack. Very good advice from Troilus and Rolo.

If she insists then show her what she needs to do in order to sheild you. Full advice is here gov.uk/government/publicati...

Once she reads about the extreme measures she'll have to take to protect you she mat think twice about working.

I take it either of you can't live separately for the duration?

Actually you could show her our responses and engage with us if she wants to know that washing her hands is NOT sufficient in order to protect you.

Not what you're looking for?
