Passed out!

Ribblevalleygirl profile image

Cough variant asthma - just coughed so hard in bed I reached to the bedside table for water and passed out. Woke on the floor with candle wax (had a couple burning on the table) in my hair. Properly scared myself 😭

Stop using candles they are not good for you and may be a trigger for your asthma

Please research magnesium and deficiency and symptoms of magnesium deficiency also research vitamins d3 k2mk7

This sounds like cough syncope. Discuss it with your doctor.

Definitely cut the candles, they have been a big trigger for me.

I also have cough variant asthma and used to burn candles just over Christmas. I have had to stop as the smell from them definitely worsened my asthma .

My husband had cough syncope when he was diagnosed with asthma last year, it lasted for about 3 months, every time he coughed he passed out. He had his driving licence removed for 6 months. Now his meds are all sort if sorted he no longer passes out.

Thanks - I cough a lot and it doesn’t usually happen, do you mind me asking what meds did they put him in for his asthma? Mine doesn’t feel very well controlled tbh

He has fostair 200, montelukast and others for his allergies, sinus difficulties etc

Sorry but another 'no candles' from me. Take care.

I agree with everyone else - no more candles!! If you want something like that why not buy the fake candles that run on batteries.

You could have set fire to your hair or worse. It's amazing how quickly hair burns (I've done it & it's frightening).

Definitely go to your Dr or asthma nurse to discuss the incident and treatment. Passing out is definitely not something to be ignored.

All the best - hope you receive effective treatment.

Yes, I too, agree about candles, especially by your bedside! Terrible fire risk if you were to fall asleep, quite apart from being an irritant.

Hi, I’ve just been put on Fostair 200 for a trial. My main symptom is coughing, especially after food!!

I’ve been taking Codeine and other meds for a trapped nerve and read that codeine suppresses your cough. Needless to say I’ve never coughed since taking the fostair !! Wonder what happens when I stop taking the codeine it’s fab not coughing!!

I can’t have these scented air fresheners in our house as it sets me off coughing!!

Lol I can’t do air fresheners either. I tried fostair but it didn’t make any difference but that’s interesting re the codeine, I’ve just stopped taking Co codamol and the cough is def worse.

Ditching the candles though.....

I am glad you are ditching the candles! I hope you don’t find the following intrusive, but just sharing a boring fact:. Unfortunately anything that burns, and other stuff, releases something called particulate matter (pm) into the air. They come in different sizes, and are often mentioned in connection with our pollution in the streets. But many things we do indoors also release them, and some are difficult to avoid. I, for instance, now sometimes react on cooking and baking smells - both a kind of burning. Burning candles also produce them (and don’t start me in scented candles!) and the particulate matter they produce can penetrate deep into our lungs. There is loads more to it, and I am no expert, but they are a well known irritant.
