Hi just a small question i have pretty bad asthma in and out of hospital and like so many enough meds to drop an elephant. I recently had an appointment with a new consultant and he said something that confused me (not hard to do) he asked when im having a tight chest moment how did i feel after a neb ( i have home nebuliser and salbutamol nebs) i said after one or two i felt much better. After a while he said that dosent sound right and asthma sufferers shouldn't feel any difference from nebs for at least a few hours. When i question him about it he told me that i might not have asthma. After suffering for 7 years or so im totally confused. Anyone had similar experiences or did i just have a muppet of a consultant.

Erm... asthmatics feel better after salb in 10-15 mins (usually faster if by nebuliser). Maybe he got confused by which drug he was talking about (ie pred takes longer to kick in etc) or confusing his asthma info with another condition (however salb for COPD and bronchiectasis is the same, better in 10/15 mins and should last 4+hours... if it doesn’t further help is needed)
I have no idea what he’s talking about. Good luck and call your AN/RN team to query and get the confusion emphasised to him!
Thanks was really at a loss at this. The way you then doubt yourself. I was sure it was fast acting. Really think this consultant was young and trying to make a name for himself. I have since spoken to my usual consultant ( bad that i have her mobile number i know ) she was pretty angry and just as confused as i. Let her sort it out. Just goes to show we cant put all our faith in some of these doctors and so called consultants. Hope your keeping well and out of A&E Emma
He was definitely a muppet! Glad your usual con could straighten things out for you (and from the sounds of it give this new Cons a rollicking 😅). I have learnt the hard way that if it doesn’t make sense then the info/instruction is probably wrong so don’t trust everything your told 🙈 (and if in doubt, like you did I ask on here jic someone can explain it to me or just say con is stupid 😉)
I’m out of hosp (3 months now... the longest stretch of freedom since I was 22/23!), loving benra, but hating this weather which even benra can’t 100% support me through... but 2 nebs plus vent a day isn’t too bad is it?! Kinda ostriching and not wanting to raise steroids as in a wean due to benra and want it to keep going down... this heat can’t last forever! 😅 dw I am planning on contacting spec hosp tomorrow to inform them as they wanted to know when I was on 2x day regularly... thinking 2 weeks on/off (more on than off) May count as a ‘consistent problem’ but 🤫🤫🤫 😂
Hope you are well other than the numpty of a consultant!!
Muppet of consultant..... salbutamol starts to work in 10-20 mins so you should feel better quickly that's the point
Muppet 😂😂 sums it up beautifully, I was going to use numpty but I think you nailed that 👍🏻
It amazes me how some of these consultants are supposedly specialists in there areas,
I had a respiratory consultant run loads of tests on me and discharge me saying I did not have asthma the letter he wrote to my gp said I probably did have asthma and should carry on (not what he said to my face as he was discharging me which was I should stop)
Seriously what?! I start to feel the effect about a minute into a neb. A few mins if had to wait for it. 2 hours?!
What everyone else said! Would go nuts if had to wait a few hours lol...they are meant to LAST 4 hours, perhaps he got confused? Also reversibility testing can be done with a neb and they make you wait 15 mins before the second test. Not 2 hours...
I agree that you can't assume they are right - I've had some weird, wrong and dangerous advice/information from resp cons including alleged asthma specialists.
I think the last line of your post sums things up pretty well 😀 I have absolutely NO idea what on earth he was talking about as the whole point of the salbutamol or ipratropium via the nebuliser is to get the meds to your airways in the quickest way possible when your rescue inhaler is not helping & you’re getting into difficulty! The idea is to do exactly what you are experiencing with the salbutamol being the fast acting agent in the emergency and the ipratropium the longer lasting one to try to prevent it. I can totally understand how confused and bewildered you must have felt but bottom line is that you are definitely doing the right thing. If you’re in trouble and your rescue inhaler isn’t helping then use the nebuliser or dial 999.
Good luck with everything!
Sorry!! I just read that back after I’d posted to you. I meant that if the rescue inhaler and the salbutamol nebuliser (ipratropium is optional) aren’t working then call 999.
All the best to you!
