Hi I'm very new to this and just been told I have asthma. I can be a anxious person before finding out being asthmatic. I must keep a happy balance and remain calm. Any tips?

Hiya. Sorry to hear you also have asthma. Don't worry, as long as it is controlled, and you take your inhalers/medication religiously every day (or whenever you have been prescribed too), you will be fine. I used to suffer from alot of panic attacks and I'm a massive worrier, but luckily (touch wood) my asthma was never really effected. At the most i would get abit of a cough, but if you ever feel like that, or that your chest is tight, take a puff on your Ventolin inhaler and it will put you right. Ventolin can sometimes increase your heart rate anyways, so if that happens, try not to worry. I was diagnosed with asthma at birth, but i read up on it alot as i got older, and found that the more understanding of it i had, and what triggers to stay away from etc, the more comfortable and relaxed i was about it :)

The most important thing is to take your medicine! Obviously the preventer, everyday one, even if you're well, but I used to have real issues with taking my salbutamol/ventolin in public in case people noticed. They never do, or at least they never look at you or make remarks, even with a spacer, so don't let fear of other people stop you taking it.

Hi Purplelady best advice I can give is asthma UK helpline 0300 222 5800 open from 9 am -5pm Mon to Fri. The nurses are experts on asthma and will help you with both practice and emotional support.

They have really helped me with the questions I have had over the years. For me understanding what is happening and how to look after myself. Having the right knowledge and the right support is key to managing your asthma both physically and mentally.
