Bronchial Thermoplasty

So ive been told that basically im at the end of the line medical therapy wise. My cons said he didnt feel any of the monoclonial antibodies available or coming (in trial) is going to effectively treat my asthma so feels that BT is the way forward. Im under RBH. I just wondered what peoples experiences were of the procedure and recovery. Thanks in advance!

Hi Becca! I have very severe “difficult” asthma & have been put on MEPOLIZUMAB injections for a year now, which have had miraculous improvements in some people. Altho it hasn’t helped me physically, tho blood results are quite astounding with the drop of eosinophils, & they are still hopeful it will show an improvement physically in time.

My local consultant has also spoken to me about this thermoplasty, but it’s as an absolutely final resort after exhaustion of trial of these new but v pricey respiratory drugs. They should really give all these a go for you before resorting to something so drastic. Be careful about what you commit to. If you’d like to message me privately I could let you know a bit more about what I’m going thru & we could compare notes.

Ive tried omalizumab and mepolizumab and if you were to just look at the bloods then i should be fine but it doesnt seem to translate into me being well unfortunately. Its very frustrating.

Can you get a different consultant’s opinion to see if it matches your existing consiltant’s view? Not suggesting your existing consultant is wrong, but a second opinion might either give added support to BT or offer an alternative treatment idea. Appreciate Royal Brompton is a reputable hospital.

My cons is going to discuss it with another cons just to check there isnt anything else that they think would be helpful but he doesnt think its likely. We originally discussed BT a year ago and put it on the back burner to try Mepo so its not the first time its been suggested to me.
