So sore

I have asthma and currently have very bad pain behind my right rib, like sore muscle from a spasm. Started a few months ago. I was in my car and I twisted to reach my purse to get something. Instead of grabbing my purse I just twisted my body and I got a cramp and I actually felt something flip roll and twisted and knotted up and cramped. I had to stop and twist myself back in the opposite direction and raise my right arm up over my head and turn my upper body in direction to make it uncramp. Brutal!! Now when I try wash my hair bent over sink and put my hairbow in, anything that raises my arms especially if Im beding it cause a muscle spasm behind my rib. Go figure. Long story short. I've been coughing alot and the asthma has flared up. Now my rib wall is so sore extremely. I went to the doctor because it hurts to cough, can't carry a conversation without getting winded. Out of breath and the pain wont stop. It hurt worse riding in the car any bumps in road turn my head it was aweful. Well I've been out of inhaler also. Pain in rib on right and muscle so bad. Took exray to may sure my lung didn't collapse all good inflated doctor said. He gave me steroid pack, oh and I had to ask, will you give a script for inhaler, right DA I said I have asthma, ok, so he did. Been on it two days. Sitting in the car at pharmacy I took a puff of inhaler, actually about six and before I left I had a little relief, the pain wasnt gone, but it was so much more easy to back up and drive myself home and the little spots in the road didn't kill me in pain . so the inhaler was needed, and I can't believe I had to ask the doctor for that. So two days in. Still hurt. Not near as bad. But the steroid pills help for a good few hours the pain eases and returns so its working a little. And while taking the steroid pack you ca not take pain pills or anti inflammatory medicines. I have to wait a week before I can take pain relievers. So there is a name of the muscle spasm type maybe unfortunate it will return because the stress and damage to that muscle behind the rib is now for keeps. I'm in severe pain now, hurts pretty bad. I researched some trying to find whats wrong but possible respiratory infection that got worse not taking the inhaler that caused the stress on muscle from continious coughing, oh and body twist a few months ago. Go back to your GP, Justsore. I can’t understand why you can’t take painkillers while on steroids. I think there has been a misunderstanding somewhere along the line! But there might be circumstances special to you, so go check it out, on an emergency appointment. Doctors never leave you in pain in my experience. It must be extremely difficult for you.

Good luck! Let us know how you get on.

Thanks, the nurse and doctor said pain reliever anti inflammatory is what I needed and if I took say ibuprophin and steroid it could cause stomach bleeding. Trust I love my ibuprophin. This doctor wasn't really into finding out what was wrong. I'm still in pain. When I have to cough or get up i lean to right which is weird becuz the right side is whats hurting. But when I do lean far right to cough it doesnt hurt as bad.

Oh yes, I understand no ibuprofen with steroids! But you could have codeine and muscle spasm relaxers prescribed, supplemented with paracetamol. I’ve just come through a very painful and long lasting muscle spasm in my back. Terrible! So leave the ibuprofen for now but do ask for a prescribed alternative.....please!

I also used a TENS machine for a while....about £30 or so on Amazon but it lasts until the next times if you remember to remove the battery as you finish regular use, till the next time. No drugs, and a great relief for me.

Oh no! I really can’t believe it. I’d make a trip to A&E and say how distressed you are with the pain, you’re just not able to cope. You really do need a second opinion. I feel so sorry for you....but we sometimes have to stand very firm, though not easy when unwell. Good luck and let us know. Take care.

I suffer with the muscle cramps in my chest, when I've had an infection and coughing a lot also if I laugh a lot. Told my consultant about it and he said it's quite normal for the muscles to cramp up in your chest when you are coughing alot. He didn't offer me anything to help, but I just try to relax until it passes, it is quite painful though.

You have my sympathy, take care x x

I know how you feel. I get a lot of chest pain and cramps when my asthma is bad. The doctors seem to ignore it. Let me know if you figure out what it is. x

I have been researching, you know we have to do that. I've twisted myself upper and I did get a charlie horse that keeps recurring when I bend or raise my arms trying to do hair or put on necklace, charlie horse comes back behind my rib. Now with allergy and asthma coughing, I may have stress the muscle too much. intercostal strain

Check out this. My only other thing I could find close to whats happening

Thank you, I also had left side pain before. I thought the worse. I slipt outside and caught myself didn't think much about it. My dog jumpded on my lap and landed on my stomach, he basically pumped the air out, took my breath away. After a day went by I was in bad pain on my left chest area, turns out, the type of impact caused swelling of my splean/ not sure but pain was terrible. Took it easy few days it calmed back down. FYI. this on my right side rib has been far lasting and breath taking literally.

Ok. I'm back. I finished the steroid medicine the doctor gave and I've still been dealing with the pain in the muscle behind my right rib. The steroids might have helped a little, but I can't say it worked very well. I still have the pain but my breathing has gotten a little better, I can cough and the pain is still there but about a 6 or 7. I took some ibuprophin it hels with the pain a little but not gone. Still hurts. So I have asthma, I have allergies, I have a deviated septum. I get sinusitis all the stime. I cough like crazy, because of nasal drainage an allergies to my animals. I think I have stressed my muscles from coughing so much and of course didn't help I twisted my upper body reaching for something, oh and fell backwards over the dog outside in the rain at bedtime. Can somebody just say MERCY! already. I work two jobs, 7 days a week. I am pushed and push myself daily. I think my symptons are from two things. The allergies, sinus, and asthma has created a windfall of problems. So I'm trying to treat the allergies and sinus to control the coughing. You know when I cough it feels like its trying to push up phlem thats stuck down far that I can't enhale deep enough to cough it out. Thats when the pain gets worse. Wow. Thanks for letting me vent a little. But I have done the same as another post, when I'm away from home, away from the pets and household lingering scents, my coughing and sniffling, breathing tends to be much better, not gone, but better relief.
