I picked up a viral illness about 2 weeks ago that lasted about a week , started to improve then cough sputum and peak flows all worsened. Sputum sent and just come back as haemophilus influenza. Anyone had this before ?

My sputum is so thick I feel like it’s choking me to death before I can cough it up( see stars in the process)

On steroids and co-amoxiclav now so off work, not sleeping and feeling rubbish !

:(

It is a very common bug which often shows up in sputum tests(I think it's been there in virtually every sputum test I've ever had done). I think it's a generically common cause of chest infections, & in a healthy adult a doctor wouldn't even blink, nor would they offer treatment as your body would normally fight it off.

However, if your lungs are compromised, it becomes a little bit more of an issue, depending on whether or not your GP/consultant thinks you can deal with it. If you have conditions such as bronchiectasis, or other damage to your airways, then the bug can start to colonise, so if that's shown up it's quite likely they would give a patient antibiotics to shift it.

In general, though, it's nothing to worry too much about & can take a bit of getting rid of, but hopefully, the medication you have will start to clear it soon.

Sounds as if a something to thin the mucous would help quicken the process of clearing chat with pharmacist
