Hi all, I am a sixty year old man who.it seems has somehow contracted asthma started about a month ago from nowhere it seems I have dogs and after doing a few experiments letting the dogs in then leavening them out it seems they are the ones that are making me lose my breath, I have a inhaler from my sister which seems to work but my eyes are running all the time and as I say when the dogs come in can't breathe properly any ideas apart from getting rid of the animals, I have had some of them ten years and a couple six or seven months. Thanks.

Hi there, sorry to hear bout your problems. However it may not be the dogs themselves, but the allergens they bring in on their coats. There is still pollen around and fungal spores. All of which get picked up by dogs. Or possibly something in your house.

I don't think it's a very good idea to use an inhaler that your sister has given you unless she is a doctor. As you have had the dogs for a long time, I suggest you visit your doctor. In the meantime I would try taking an OTC antihistamine like loratadine, you can buy this in boots or ask a pharmacist. You can get allergies or asthma at any age, but this should be discussed with a doctor.

Dogs are a very common trigger for asthma and I'm afraid you might have to think about re-homing, which I know will cause you much grief, but these allergies can appear at any time of life, and your well-being is the most important. You can hardly keep a dog and not stroke it, even if it lives in a kennel outside.

You can get allergy testing which should work for you. First of all, you really must see your GP. A GP can prescribe stronger anti-histamines than the ones you buy at the chemist, and you will probably get preventer inhalers and better advice than any of us can give you.

I do feel for you and wish you well.

Yes I agree with risabel59 it's more likely what they have on their coats etc and also you shouldn't self medicate it's potentially dangerous and you may need a different inhaler and also anti histamine , I can't say anymore as it's been said so eloquently by risabel59 . Go see you're dr let us know how you get though would be good to hear what the doc says . X😇

Please have allergy testing for proof of dog allergy before you get rid of your trusted friends!

Sorry to hear of your situation. My circumstances were fairly similar. I had an allergy blood test which was negative for dogs. I am though getting an asthma reaction from dogs and some other animals. I have always had dogs but find in my sixties I can no longer tolerate being close to them despite using inhalers. Hard decisions may be required if you are unable to get adequate medication.
