Osteomalacia means that your ability to produce bone is not functioning as it should .

Taking vitamin D as a supliment aids the process of turning calcium into bone . Vitamin D is a cheap off the shelf supliment obtainable at all the supermarkets or chemists .

Vitamin D is beneficial in other ways too , and as far as I know there are no side effects from its use .

Thanks for the info if I take the vitamin D would that cure this as I am in severe pain which makes it difficult for me to do any tasks or walk too far

I am not a medical expert , but I have to take vitamin D for a condition that I have .

My understanding is that it won't cure you as such , but the vitamin is essential for bone formation and therefore vital for your recovery / good health .

The vitamin is so cheap and easy to take , and as far as I know completely safe there really is no reason for you not to be taking it .

I'm surprised that your health professionals haven't told you this - but perhaps they already have .

Did your GP not advise you to take Vit D to get your levels back up to normal range? My level was 9- a new record for my nurse at the respiratory clinic! She told me to take 4,000 i/u a day: the usual dose is 1,000. I am to have a blood test after I've been on the supplement for 6 months. My local Tesco pharmacy do the cheapest vit D supplement I have come across so far :-) All the best xx

I have osteomalacia and that means is your body can't absorb vitamin D naturally which puts you at risk for bone pain, fracture, soft brittle bones and muscle pain, in children it's called rickets and that happens usually due to malnutrition where they lack of vitamin D, they have major bone deformities with it. My number was 17 as well! I've been diagnosed for 6 years and failed to take vitamin D and am in excruciating bone pain, and now have just started vitamin D for the second time. It's does help, people with extreme pain notice a difference within a month or two and by 6-12 months symptoms can disappear for some! Be hopeful, I am! I hope this helped!! I hope you're feeling better

Your pain is due to lacking vitamin D, once you're on vitamin D for a while your symptoms will alleviate due to having the appropriate amount your body needs. Hang In it May take some time. Side affects only happen if your magnesium is off and some kidney stone formers(I'm a stone former but haven't noticed anything) say it's causes more kidney pain and jury is out if they make stones worse or not. I hope this helped! Xoxo
