Hi,

Well there's type 1 and type 2.

Basically, in type 1, your peak flows are always variable or your asthma is always uncontrolled/poorly-controlled. People with type 1 are always on a lot of meds. Your peak flows may go downhill for weeks before a severe or life-threatening attack.

In type 2, you may need a lot of meds or relatively few because between attacks your asthma is apparently controlled and peak flows don't change much. But then when you have attacks, it's sudden and fast and severe with little-to-no warning.

I would say to everyone though; don't automatically assume you have type 1 even if you have severe and life-threatening attacks and poorly-controlled asthma, as you may just need more of a certain med, or another add-on. That in itself may make attacks less severe (a person with well-controlled, non-brittle asthma may have multiple severe attacks when their asthma is not controlled, but they may have none once they are on the right things).

Hi Matt, thank you for taking the time to explain, I didn't understand why I could get along on a few meds between attacks, when the attacks came on without warning and were so severe.

I was told by both consultant and GP that I have Brittle Asthma when I said which one ( I was told just Brittle) but reading on which type is what I'd Deffo say I'm type 1...

Hey, thanks for such a warm welcome 😘 I'm recovering from being in intensive care 3 weeks ago, but slowly getting there. Just having to take things insanely slowly. Having a lot of mild attacks that my nebulisers sort and hoping that the 6th admission of this year will be the last!!

How's everyone else doing? Xxx

I missed ICU this time, thankfully, but I'm sat in hospital after being admitted through resus on Monday night *sigh*

Still struggling to get through without nebs

Is there any chance of home nebs? I've had them for a while now and changed my life. I understand the reluctance to give asthmatics nebulisers, but with care and clear instructions and action plans they really can work wonders. Xxx

I have my own nebuliser at home ,,,,I wouldn't be withou it ,just knowing its there if I need it ,

Hi Twinkle-Toes, I have brittle asthma to and I find it very hard to control. I seem to be getting worse each year and am under 2 hospitals. I can feel a cold coming on and I am dreading it. Its hard when you have had a severe attack and it does take a long time to recover but be patient and kind to yourself and your soon be back to normal x I think coming on here stopped me hitting depression because everyone is so kind. I hope you feel better soon and take care xx
