Seek cough treatment if you experience chronic cough

If you have been coughing persistently and not been sleeping well, it’s probably time to visit a doctor. Coughing is one of the symptoms of asthma and is often treated independently without considering other symptoms. For this reason, it is important to take note of the symptoms you’re facing and talk to your doctor openly about it.

Asthma is a disease of the airways that makes breathing difficult and is long lasting in nature. Symptoms include coughing, wheezing, breathlessness and chest tightness amongst others. However, correct diagnosis and proper treatment can help a person lead a normal life without any interferences. It is important to note that since asthma has no cure, the aim of the treatment is to only control the disease.

Asthma treatment can be obtained to gain immediate relief or for long term purposes. Long term medication is generally used to reduce inflammation in the airways, whereas inhalers can be used to provide quick relief during an asthma attack. Anti-inflammatory and bronchodilator asthma inhalers, oral medications and asthma drugs supplied though a nebulizer are usually prescribed to control the symptoms of asthma.

-    Most people with asthma are prescribed with anti-inflammatory drugs such as inhaled steroids. This medication helps reduce inflammation of the airways and hence reduce the frequency of flare ups.

-    Bronchodilators are used to open inflamed airways and can be used on a short-term basis to provide immediate relief or a long-term basis to keep asthma symptoms in control. Primarily, there are three types of bronchodilators available that include beta-agonists, anticholinergic and theophylline.

-    Asthma nebulizers are prescribed when a patient is having trouble using an inhaler.  The nebulizer converts the liquid medicine into a mist form enabling easy inhalation to the lungs. This is commonly used to deliver medication to infants and children.

If you are coughing, the first step would be to understand the difference between a cough and asthma as a cough treatment may not help reduce any symptoms you are facing.  Next would be to obtain proper treatment if diagnosed with asthma. Keep a watch on your triggers and avoid things that can make your condition worse. For instance, air pollution is a trigger for a number of people. Additionally, asthma may also be related to an allergy, in which case you might have to get allergy injections.

To conclude, the goal should be to reduce dependency on quick relief bronchodilators. This can be achieved by taking medication daily, having appropriate lifestyle changes and avoiding triggers that can cause an asthma attack.
